^9 (A)not a result of works, ^(B)so that no one may boast.

^9 (A)who saved us and ^(B)called us to^[a] a holy calling, ^(C)not because of our works but because of ^(D)his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus ^(E)before the ages began,^[b]

^6 (A)But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. ⁴ But when ^(B)the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, ^(C)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but ^(D)according to his own mercy, by ^(E)the washing of regeneration and ^(F)renewal of the Holy Spirit,

²⁹ so ^(A)that no human being^[a] might boast in the presence of God. ³⁰ And because of him^[b] you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us ^(B)wisdom from God, ^(C)righteousness and ^(D)sanctification and ^(E)redemption, ³¹ so that, as it is written, ^(F)“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

¹⁶ So then it depends not on human will or exertion,^[a] but on God, who has mercy.

¹¹ though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of ^(A)him who calls—

^27 (A)Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. ²⁸ For we hold that one is justified by faith ^(B)apart from works of the law.

²⁰ For ^(A)by works of the law no human being^[a] will be justified in his sight, since ^(B)through the law comes knowledge of sin.
