¹² People, despite their wealth, do not endure;^(A)
    they are like the beasts that perish.^(B)

⁴⁷ Remember how fleeting is my life.^(A)
    For what futility you have created all humanity!
⁴⁸ Who can live and not see death,
    or who can escape the power of the grave?^(B)

²⁰ People who have wealth but lack understanding^(A)
    are like the beasts that perish.^(B)

¹⁰ But a man dies and is laid low;^(A)
    he breathes his last and is no more.^(B)
11 As the water of a lake dries up
    or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,^(C)
12 so he lies down and does not rise;^(D)
    till the heavens are no more,^(E) people will not awake
    or be roused from their sleep.^(F)

¹⁶ For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;^(A)
    the days have already come when both have been forgotten.^(B)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!^(C)

²⁹ When you hide your face,^(A)
    they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
    they die and return to the dust.^(B)
