Paul’s Ministry to the Gentiles

For this reason, I, Paul, the prisoner(A) of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— you have heard, haven’t you, about the administration of God’s grace that He gave to me for you? The mystery was made known to me by revelation,(B) as I have briefly written above. By reading this you are able to understand my insight about the mystery of the Messiah.(C) This was not made known to people[a] in other generations as it is now revealed to His holy apostles and prophets(D) by the Spirit: The Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and partners of the promise(E) in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I was made a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of His power.(F)

This grace was given to me—the least of all the saints—to proclaim to the Gentiles the incalculable riches(G) of the Messiah, and to shed light for all about the administration of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created(H) all things. 10 This is so God’s multi-faceted wisdom(I) may now be made known through the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavens.(J) 11 This is according to His eternal purpose(K) accomplished in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord. 12 In Him we have boldness and confident access(L) through faith in Him.[b] 13 So then I ask you not to be discouraged(M) over my afflictions on your behalf, for they are your glory.(N)

Prayer for Spiritual Power

14 For this reason I kneel(O) before the Father[c] 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. 16 I pray that He may grant you, according to the riches(P) of His glory,(Q) to be strengthened with power(R) in the inner man(S) through His Spirit, 17 and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love,(T) 19 and to know the Messiah’s love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to Him who is able(U) to do above and beyond all that we ask or think(V) according to the power(W) that works in us— 21 to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.(X)

Unity and Diversity in the Body of Christ

Therefore I, the prisoner for the Lord,(Y) urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility(Z) and gentleness, with patience,(AA) accepting[d](AB) one another in love,(AC) diligently keeping the unity(AD) of the Spirit(AE) with the peace(AF) that binds us. There is one body and one Spirit(AG)—just as you were called to one hope[e](AH) at your calling— one Lord,(AI) one faith,(AJ) one baptism, one God(AK) and Father(AL) of all, who is above all and through all and in all.(AM)

Now grace was given to each one of us(AN) according to the measure of the Messiah’s gift. For it says:

When He ascended(AO) on high,
He took prisoners into captivity;[f]
He gave gifts to people.(AP)[g]

But what does “He ascended” mean except that He[h] descended to the lower parts of the earth?[i](AQ) 10 The One who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens,(AR) that He might fill[j] all things.(AS) 11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ,(AT) 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son,(AU) growing into a mature man with a stature(AV) measured by Christ’s fullness. 14 Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching,(AW) by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit. 15 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head(AX)—Christ. 16 From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together(AY) by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth(AZ) of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part.

Living the New Life

17 Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their thoughts. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts. 19 They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity(BA) with a desire for more and more.[k]

20 But that is not how you learned about the Messiah, 21 assuming you heard about Him and were taught by Him, because the truth(BB) is in Jesus. 22 You took off[l](BC) your former way of life,(BD) the old self[m](BE) that is corrupted by deceitful desires; 23 you are being renewed[n] in the spirit(BF) of your minds; 24 you put on[o](BG) the new self, the one created(BH) according to God’s likeness(BI) in righteousness and purity of the truth.

25 Since you put away(BJ) lying, Speak the truth, each one to his neighbor,(BK)[p] because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin.(BL)[q] Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don’t give the Devil an opportunity. 28 The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share(BM) with anyone in need. 29 No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need,[r] so that it gives grace to those who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit.(BN) You were sealed by Him[s] for the day of redemption.(BO) 31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind(BP) and compassionate(BQ) to one another, forgiving(BR) one another, just as God also forgave you[t] in Christ.

Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children. And walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us and gave Himself for us,(BS) a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God. But sexual immorality(BT) and any impurity(BU) or greed(BV) should not even be heard of[u] among you, as is proper for saints. Coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks. For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral(BW) or impure(BX) or greedy(BY) person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom(BZ) of the Messiah and of God.

Light versus Darkness

Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God’s wrath(CA) is coming on the disobedient because of these things.[v] Therefore, do not become their partners. For you were once darkness, but now you are light(CB) in the Lord. Walk as children of light(CC) for the fruit of the light[w] results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth(CD) 10 discerning(CE) what is pleasing(CF) to the Lord. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless(CG) works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made clear,(CH) 14 for what makes everything clear is light. Therefore it is said:

Get up, sleeper,(CI) and rise up from the dead,(CJ)
and the Messiah will shine on you.[x](CK)

God’s Marvelous Plan for the Gentiles

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner(A) of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—

Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me(B) for you, that is, the mystery(C) made known to me by revelation,(D) as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight(E) into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.(F) This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs(G) together with Israel, members together of one body,(H) and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.(I)

I became a servant of this gospel(J) by the gift of God’s grace given me(K) through the working of his power.(L) Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people,(M) this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles(N) the boundless riches of Christ,(O) and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery,(P) which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God(Q) should be made known(R) to the rulers and authorities(S) in the heavenly realms,(T) 11 according to his eternal purpose(U) that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God(V) with freedom and confidence.(W) 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel(X) before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches(Y) he may strengthen you with power(Z) through his Spirit in your inner being,(AA) 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts(AB) through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted(AC) and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,(AD) to grasp how wide and long and high and deep(AE) is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge(AF)—that you may be filled(AG) to the measure of all the fullness of God.(AH)

20 Now to him who is able(AI) to do immeasurably more than all we ask(AJ) or imagine, according to his power(AK) that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.(AL)

Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ

As a prisoner(AM) for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy(AN) of the calling(AO) you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another(AP) in love.(AQ) Make every effort to keep the unity(AR) of the Spirit through the bond of peace.(AS) There is one body(AT) and one Spirit,(AU) just as you were called to one hope when you were called(AV); one Lord,(AW) one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all,(AX) who is over all and through all and in all.(AY)

But to each one of us(AZ) grace(BA) has been given(BB) as Christ apportioned it. This is why it[b] says:

“When he ascended on high,
    he took many captives(BC)
and gave gifts to his people.”[c](BD)

(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[d]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended(BE) higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)(BF) 11 So Christ himself gave(BG) the apostles,(BH) the prophets,(BI) the evangelists,(BJ) the pastors and teachers,(BK) 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ(BL) may be built up(BM) 13 until we all reach unity(BN) in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God(BO) and become mature,(BP) attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.(BQ)

14 Then we will no longer be infants,(BR) tossed back and forth by the waves,(BS) and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.(BT) 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,(BU) we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head,(BV) that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows(BW) and builds itself up(BX) in love,(BY) as each part does its work.

Instructions for Christian Living

17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer(BZ) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.(CA) 18 They are darkened in their understanding(CB) and separated from the life of God(CC) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.(CD) 19 Having lost all sensitivity,(CE) they have given themselves over(CF) to sensuality(CG) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off(CH) your old self,(CI) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(CJ) 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;(CK) 24 and to put on(CL) the new self,(CM) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.(CN)

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully(CO) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.(CP) 26 “In your anger do not sin”[e]:(CQ) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.(CR) 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,(CS) doing something useful with their own hands,(CT) that they may have something to share with those in need.(CU)

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,(CV) but only what is helpful for building others up(CW) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(CX) with whom you were sealed(CY) for the day of redemption.(CZ) 31 Get rid of(DA) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(DB) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(DC) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(DD) Follow God’s example,(DE) therefore, as dearly loved children(DF) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(DG) and gave himself up for us(DH) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(DI)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(DJ) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(DK) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(DL) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(DM) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(DN)—has any inheritance(DO) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[f](DP) Let no one deceive you(DQ) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(DR) comes on those who are disobedient.(DS) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(DT) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(DU) (for the fruit(DV) of the light consists in all goodness,(DW) righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.(DX) 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,(DY) but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light(DZ) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,(EA)
    rise from the dead,(EB)
and Christ will shine on you.”(EC)
