The Lord spoke with you (A)face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, (B)while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For (C)you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

(D)“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

“‘You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to (E)thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

11 “‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but (F)the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, (G)that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 (H)You shall remember that you were a slave[c] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there (I)with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

16 “‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, (J)that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

17 (K)“‘You shall not murder.[d]

18 (L)“‘And you shall not commit adultery.

19 “‘And you shall not steal.

20 “‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

21 “‘And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.’

22 “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly (M)at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And (N)he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And (O)as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. 24 And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and (P)greatness, and (Q)we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man (R)still live. 25 Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. (S)If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. 26 (T)For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? 27 Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and (U)speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’

28 “And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. (V)They are right in all that they have spoken. 29 (W)Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, (X)that it might go well with them and with their descendants[e] forever!

A New Prophet like Moses

15 (A)“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb (B)on the day of the assembly, when you said, (C)‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ 17 And the Lord said to me, (D)‘They are right in what they have spoken. 18 (E)I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. (F)And I will put my words in his mouth, and (G)he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 (H)And whoever will (I)not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

God Will Swallow Up Death Forever

53 (A)Who has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
    And to whom has (B)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    (C)and like a root out of dry ground;
(D)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
(E)He was despised and rejected[b] by men,
    a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d] grief;[e]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
    he was despised, and (F)we esteemed him not.

(G)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    (H)smitten by God, and afflicted.
(I)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    (J)and with his wounds we are healed.
(K)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
(L)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    (M)yet he opened not his mouth;
(N)like a (O)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, (P)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked
    (Q)and with a rich man in his death,
although (R)he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet (S)it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[g]
(T)when his soul makes[h] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
(U)the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[i] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall (V)the righteous one, my servant,
    (W)make many to be accounted righteous,
    (X)and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 (Y)Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[j]
    (Z)and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[k]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
(AA)yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Comfort for the Contrite

14 And it shall be said,
(A)“Build up, build up, prepare the way,
    remove every obstruction from my people's way.”
15 For thus says (B)the One who is high and lifted up,
    who inhabits eternity, whose name is (C)Holy:
(D)“I dwell in the high and holy place,
    and also (E)with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
(F)to revive the spirit of the lowly,
    and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 (G)For I will not contend forever,
    nor will I always be angry;
for the spirit would grow faint before me,
    and the breath of life that I made.
17 Because of the iniquity of his (H)unjust gain I was angry,
    I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
    but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
18 I have seen his ways, (I)but I will heal him;
    I will lead him (J)and restore comfort to him and his mourners,
19     (K)creating (L)the fruit of the lips.
(M)Peace, peace, (N)to the far and to the near,” says the Lord,
    (O)“and I will heal him.
