The Ten Commandments

5 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 (A)The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 (B)Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. 4 The Lord spoke with you (C)face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, 5 (D)while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For (E)you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

6 (F)“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

7 “‘You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

8 “‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to (G)thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

11 “‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but (H)the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, (I)that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 (J)You shall remember that you were a slave[c] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there (K)with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

16 “‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, (L)that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

17 (M)“‘You shall not murder.[d]

18 (N)“‘And you shall not commit adultery.

19 “‘And you shall not steal.

20 “‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

21 “‘And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.’

22 “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly (O)at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And (P)he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And (Q)as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. 24 And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and (R)greatness, and (S)we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man (T)still live. 25 Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. (U)If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. 26 (V)For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? 27 Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and (W)speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’

28 “And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. (X)They are right in all that they have spoken. 29 (Y)Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, (Z)that it might go well with them and with their descendants[e] forever! 30 Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But you, stand here by me, and (AA)I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ 32 You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. (AB)You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 (AC)You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and (AD)that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

The Greatest Commandment

6 “Now this is (AE)the commandment—the statutes and the rules[f]—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that (AF)you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and (AG)that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, (AH)as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 “Hear, O Israel: (AI)The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[g] 5 You (AJ)shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And (AK)these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 (AL)You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 (AM)You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 (AN)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities (AO)that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 (AP)then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is (AQ)the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and (AR)by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not (AS)go after other gods, (AT)the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for (AU)the Lord your God in your midst (AV)is a jealous God—(AW)lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

16 (AX)“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, (AY)as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall (AZ)diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 (BA)And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 (BB)by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

20 (BC)“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, (BD)‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And (BE)the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, (BF)to fear the Lord our God, (BG)for our good always, that (BH)he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And (BI)it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

A Chosen People

7 “When the (BJ)Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, (BK)the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations (BL)more numerous and mightier than you, 2 (BM)and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must (BN)devote them to complete destruction.[h] (BO)You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. 3 (BP)You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, 4 for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. (BQ)Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you (BR)quickly. 5 But thus shall you deal with them: (BS)you shall break down their altars and dash in pieces their (BT)pillars and chop down their (BU)Asherim and (BV)burn their carved images with fire.

6 “For (BW)you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be (BX)a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but (BY)it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping (BZ)the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, (CA)the faithful God (CB)who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and (CC)repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. (CD)He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11 (CE)You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.

12 (CF)“And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you (CG)the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. 13 He will (CH)love you, bless you, and multiply you. (CI)He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples. (CJ)There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil (CK)diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. 16 And (CL)you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. (CM)Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be (CN)a snare to you.

17 “If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ 18 (CO)you shall not be afraid of them but you shall (CP)remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt, 19 the great trials that your eyes saw, (CQ)the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So will the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Moreover, (CR)the Lord your God will send hornets among them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you are destroyed. 21 You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is (CS)in your midst, (CT)a great and awesome God. 22 (CU)The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once,[i] lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you. 23 (CV)But the Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed. 24 And (CW)he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall (CX)make their name perish from under heaven. (CY)No one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. 25 The carved images of their gods (CZ)you shall burn with fire. You (DA)shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be (DB)ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. 26 And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction[j] like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, (DC)for it is devoted to destruction.

Remember the Lord Your God

8 “The whole commandment that I command you today (DD)you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you (DE)these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, (DF)testing you (DG)to know what was in your heart, (DH)whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbled you and (DI)let you hunger and (DJ)fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that (DK)man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word[k] that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 (DL)Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, (DM)as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. 6 So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, (DN)a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, (DO)of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9 a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

11 “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 (DP)lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 (DQ)then your heart be lifted up, and you (DR)forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who (DS)led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, (DT)with its fiery serpents and scorpions (DU)and thirsty ground where there was no water, (DV)who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with (DW)manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, (DX)to do you good in the end. 17 Beware (DY)lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for (DZ)it is he who gives you power to get wealth, (EA)that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, (EB)I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, (EC)so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

The Ten Commandments(A)

5 Moses summoned all Israel and said:

Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws(B) I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant(C) with us at Horeb.(D) 3 It was not with our ancestors[a] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us,(E) with all of us who are alive here today.(F) 4 The Lord spoke(G) to you face to face(H) out of the fire(I) on the mountain. 5 (At that time I stood between(J) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid(K) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

6 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt,(L) out of the land of slavery.(M)

7 “You shall have no other gods before[b] me.

8 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.(N) 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents(O) to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,(P) 10 but showing love to a thousand(Q) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.(R)

11 “You shall not misuse the name(S) of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.(T)

12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,(U) as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day(V) is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant,(W) nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.(X) 15 Remember that you were slaves(Y) in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand(Z) and an outstretched arm.(AA) Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

16 “Honor your father(AB) and your mother,(AC) as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long(AD) and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

17 “You shall not murder.(AE)

18 “You shall not commit adultery.(AF)

19 “You shall not steal.(AG)

20 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.(AH)

21 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”(AI)

22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness;(AJ) and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets(AK) and gave them to me.

23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders(AL) came to me. 24 And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us(AM) his glory and his majesty,(AN) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.(AO) 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.(AP) 26 For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?(AQ) 27 Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says.(AR) Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”(AS)

28 The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good.(AT) 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me(AU) and keep all my commands(AV) always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!(AW)

30 “Go, tell them to return to their tents. 31 But you stay here(AX) with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.”

32 So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you;(AY) do not turn aside to the right or to the left.(AZ) 33 Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you,(BA) so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days(BB) in the land that you will possess.

Love the Lord Your God

6 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear(BC) the Lord your God as long as you live(BD) by keeping all his decrees and commands(BE) that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.(BF) 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey(BG) so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly(BH) in a land flowing with milk and honey,(BI) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised(BJ) you.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[c](BK) 5 Love(BL) the Lord your God with all your heart(BM) and with all your soul and with all your strength.(BN) 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.(BO) 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.(BP) 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.(BQ) 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.(BR)

10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,(BS) 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,(BT) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,(BU) 12 be careful that you do not forget(BV) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

13 Fear the Lord(BW) your God, serve him only(BX) and take your oaths(BY) in his name.(BZ) 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15 for the Lord your God(CA), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test(CB) as you did at Massah. 17 Be sure to keep(CC) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.(CD) 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,(CE) so that it may go well(CF) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, 19 thrusting out all your enemies(CG) before you, as the Lord said.

20 In the future, when your son asks you,(CH) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” 21 tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(CI) 22 Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,(CJ) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.(CK) 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law(CL) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.(CM)”

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess(CN) and drives out before you many nations(CO)—the Hittites,(CP) Girgashites,(CQ) Amorites,(CR) Canaanites, Perizzites,(CS) Hivites(CT) and Jebusites,(CU) seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God has delivered(CV) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy(CW) them totally.[d](CX) Make no treaty(CY) with them, and show them no mercy.(CZ) 3 Do not intermarry with them.(DA) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,(DB) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy(DC) you. 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles[e](DD) and burn their idols in the fire.(DE) 6 For you are a people holy(DF) to the Lord your God.(DG) The Lord your God has chosen(DH) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.(DI)

7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous(DJ) than other peoples, for you were the fewest(DK) of all peoples.(DL) 8 But it was because the Lord loved(DM) you and kept the oath he swore(DN) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand(DO) and redeemed(DP) you from the land of slavery,(DQ) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;(DR) he is the faithful God,(DS) keeping his covenant of love(DT) to a thousand generations(DU) of those who love him and keep his commandments.(DV) 10 But

those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
    he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.(DW)

11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.(DX) 13 He will love you and bless you(DY) and increase your numbers.(DZ) He will bless the fruit of your womb,(EA) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine(EB) and olive oil(EC)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(ED) 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.(EE) 15 The Lord will keep you free from every disease.(EF) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,(EG) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.(EH) 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.(EI) Do not look on them with pity(EJ) and do not serve their gods,(EK) for that will be a snare(EL) to you.

17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?(EM)” 18 But do not be afraid(EN) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.(EO) 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand(EP) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.(EQ) 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet(ER) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,(ES) is a great and awesome God.(ET) 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.(EU) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.(EV) 24 He will give their kings(EW) into your hand,(EX) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;(EY) you will destroy them.(EZ) 25 The images of their gods you are to burn(FA) in the fire. Do not covet(FB) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared(FC) by it, for it is detestable(FD) to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.(FE) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

Do Not Forget the Lord

8 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live(FF) and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.(FG) 2 Remember how the Lord your God led(FH) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test(FI) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled(FJ) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,(FK) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach(FL) you that man does not live on bread(FM) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth(FN) of the Lord.(FO) 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.(FP) 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(FQ)

6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him(FR) and revering him.(FS) 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land(FT)—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;(FU) 8 a land with wheat and barley,(FV) vines(FW) and fig trees,(FX) pomegranates, olive oil and honey;(FY) 9 a land where bread(FZ) will not be scarce and you will lack nothing;(GA) a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.(GB)

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied,(GC) praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget(GD) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(GE) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(GF) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(GG) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(GH) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(GI) 16 He gave you manna(GJ) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(GK) to humble and test(GL) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(GM) “My power and the strength of my hands(GN) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(GO) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods(GP) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.(GQ) 20 Like the nations(GR) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.(GS)
