15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites.(A) You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”(B)

17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet(C) like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words(D) in his mouth.(E) He will tell them everything I command him.(F) 19 I myself will call to account(G) anyone who does not listen(H) to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.(I)

18 But this is how God fulfilled(A) what he had foretold(B) through all the prophets,(C) saying that his Messiah would suffer.(D) 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,(E) that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah,(F) who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him(G) until the time comes for God to restore everything,(H) as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.(I) 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.(J) 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’[a](K)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(A) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(B) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(C) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth,(D) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(E) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(F) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(G)
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(H) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[a](I)

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(J) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(K) in your hearing.”
