⁷ “You shall not abhor an Edomite, for ^(A)he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because ^(B)you were a sojourner in his land.

^19 (A)Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

^21 (A)“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

^34 (A)You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and ^(B)you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

^9 (A)“You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

²⁴ When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. ²⁵ The first came out red, ^(A)all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. ²⁶ Afterward his brother came out with ^(B)his hand holding Esau's heel, so ^(C)his name was called Jacob.^[a] Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

Edom Refuses Passage

^14 (A)Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to ^(B)the king of Edom: “Thus says ^(C)your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met:

³⁰ And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.^[a])

¹⁰ and rescued him out of all his afflictions and ^(A)gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, ^(B)who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. ¹¹ Now ^(C)there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. ^12 (D)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. ¹³ And ^(E)on the second visit ^(F)Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and ^(G)Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. ¹⁴ And ^(H)Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, ^(I)seventy-five persons in all. ¹⁵ And ^(J)Jacob went down into Egypt, and ^(K)he died, he ^(L)and our fathers, ¹⁶ and ^(M)they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that ^(N)Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

¹⁷ “But ^(O)as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, ^(P)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt ¹⁸ until there arose over Egypt another king ^(Q)who did not know Joseph.
