^23 (A)his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for ^(B)a hanged man is cursed by God. ^(C)You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

¹³ Christ ^(A)redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ^(B)“Cursed is everyone who is hanged ^(C)on a tree”—

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

³¹ Since it was ^(A)the day of Preparation, and ^(B)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was ^(C)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.

^21 (A)For our sake he made him to be sin ^(B)who knew no sin, so that in him we might become ^(C)the righteousness of God.

³ For ^(A)I could wish that I myself were ^(B)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,^[a] my kinsmen ^(C)according to the flesh.

²⁵ and the ^(A)land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land ^(B)vomited out its inhabitants.

²⁶ And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And ^(A)they hung on the trees until evening. ²⁷ But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and ^(B)they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

^29 (A)And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. ^(B)And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city and ^(C)raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day.

⁴ And the Lord said to Moses, ^(A)“Take all the chiefs of the people and ^(B)hang^[a] them in the sun before the Lord, ^(C)that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”
