^2 (A)You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, ^(B)on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

⁵ But thus you shall deal with them: you shall ^(A)destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their ^[a]wooden images, and burn their carved images with fire.

⁴ And he sacrificed and burned incense on the ^(A)high places, ^(B)on the hills, and under every green tree.

²⁵ You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire; you shall not ^(A)covet^[a] the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. ²⁶ Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, ^(B)for it is an ^[b]accursed thing.

A Call to Repentance

⁶ The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what ^(A)backsliding Israel has done? She has ^(B)gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot.

^10 (A)They set up for themselves sacred pillars and ^(B)wooden images^{[a] (C)}on every high hill and under every green tree. ¹¹ There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the Lord had carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger,

⁵¹ “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ^(A)‘When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, ^52 (B)then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their ^[a]high places;

²⁸ When I brought them into the land concerning which I had raised My hand in an oath to give them, and ^(A)they saw all the high hills and all the thick trees, there they offered their sacrifices and provoked Me with their offerings. There they also sent up their ^(B)sweet aroma and poured out their drink offerings. ²⁹ Then I said to them, ‘What is this ^[a]high place to which you go?’ So its name is called ^[b]Bamah to this day.” ’
