“The king of the south will increase in power, but one of his own officials will become more powerful than he and will rule his kingdom with great strength.

“Some years later an alliance will be formed between the king of the north and the king of the south. The daughter of the king of the south will be given in marriage to the king of the north to secure the alliance, but she will lose her influence over him, and so will her father. She will be abandoned along with her supporters. But when one of her relatives[a] becomes king of the south, he will raise an army and enter the fortress of the king of the north and defeat him. When he returns to Egypt, he will carry back their idols with him, along with priceless articles of gold and silver. For some years afterward he will leave the king of the north alone.

“Later the king of the north will invade the realm of the king of the south but will soon return to his own land. 10 However, the sons of the king of the north will assemble a mighty army that will advance like a flood and carry the battle as far as the enemy’s fortress.

11 “Then, in a rage, the king of the south will rally against the vast forces assembled by the king of the north and will defeat them. 12 After the enemy army is swept away, the king of the south will be filled with pride and will execute many thousands of his enemies. But his success will be short lived.

13 “A few years later the king of the north will return with a fully equipped army far greater than before. 14 At that time there will be a general uprising against the king of the south. Violent men among your own people will join them in fulfillment of this vision, but they will not succeed. 15 Then the king of the north will come and lay siege to a fortified city and capture it. The best troops of the south will not be able to stand in the face of the onslaught.

16 “The king of the north will march onward unopposed; none will be able to stop him. He will pause in the glorious land of Israel,[b] intent on destroying it. 17 He will make plans to come with the might of his entire kingdom and will form an alliance with the king of the south. He will give him a daughter in marriage in order to overthrow the kingdom from within, but his plan will fail.

18 “After this, he will turn his attention to the coastland and conquer many cities. But a commander from another land will put an end to his insolence and cause him to retreat in shame. 19 He will take refuge in his own fortresses but will stumble and fall and be seen no more.

“Then the (A)king of the South will grow strong, [a]along with one of his princes [b]who will grow strong over him and [c]obtain dominion; indeed, his [d]domain will be a great [e]dominion. And [f]after some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the (B)king of the North to carry out [g]an equitable arrangement. But she will not retain her [h]position of power, nor will he continue to stand with his [i]power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who fathered her as well as he who strengthened her in those times. But one of the [j]descendants of her line will stand in his place, and he will come against their military force and enter the (C)fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and display strength. And also their (D)gods with their [k]metal images and their desirable vessels of silver and gold he will bring into captivity to Egypt, and he on his part will stand back from attacking the king of the North for some years. Then [l]the latter will enter the kingdom of the king of the South, but will return to his own land.

10 “And his sons will wage war. So they will gather a multitude of great forces; and one of them will keep on coming and (E)overflow and pass through, that he may [m]again wage war up to his very fortress. 11 And the (F)king of the South will be enraged and go forth and fight [n]with the king of the North. Then the latter will cause a great multitude to stand, but that multitude will be given into [o]the hand of the former. 12 Then the multitude will be carried away, his heart will be lifted up, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail. 13 And the king of the North will again cause a much greater multitude than the former to stand, and at the (G)end of the times of those years, he will keep on coming with a great military force and much equipment.

14 “Now in those times many will stand against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to cause the vision to stand, but they will [p]fall down. 15 Then the king of the North will come, cast up a (H)siege ramp, and capture a well-fortified city; and the might of the South will not stand, not even [q]their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. 16 But he who comes against him will (I)do as he pleases, and (J)no one will be able to stand in [r]opposition to him; he will also stand for a time in the [s](K)Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand. 17 And he will (L)set his face to come with the authority of his whole kingdom, [t]bringing with him [u]an equitable proposal which he will [v]put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to destroy it. But she will not take a stand for him or be [w]on his side. 18 Then he will turn his face to the (M)coastlands and capture many. But a ruler will make his reproach against him cease; moreover, he will (N)repay him for his reproach. 19 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will (O)stumble and fall and be (P)found no more.
