Daniel Taken to Babylon

In the third year of (A)the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of (B)the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to (C)the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, (D)and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, (E)his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family[a] and of (F)the nobility, youths without (G)blemish, of good appearance and (H)skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to (I)teach them the literature and language of the (J)Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of (K)the food that the king ate, and of (L)the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for (M)three years, and at the end of that time they were to (N)stand before the king. Among these were (O)Daniel, (P)Hananiah, (Q)Mishael, and (R)Azariah of the tribe of Judah. And (S)the chief of the eunuchs (T)gave them names: (U)Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

Daniel's Faithfulness

But Daniel (V)resolved that he would not (W)defile himself with (X)the king's food, or with (Y)the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to (Z)defile himself. (AA)And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Test your servants for (AB)ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat (AC)the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate (AD)the king's food. 16 (AE)So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them (AF)vegetables.

17 As for these four youths, (AG)God gave them learning and (AH)skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had (AI)understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of (AJ)the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore (AK)they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all (AL)the magicians and (AM)enchanters that were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel (AN)was there until the first year of (AO)King Cyrus.

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; (AP)his spirit was troubled, and (AQ)his sleep left him. Then the king commanded that (AR)the magicians, (AS)the enchanters, the (AT)sorcerers, and (AU)the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and (AV)stood before the king. And the king said to them, “I had a dream, and (AW)my spirit is troubled to know the dream.” Then (AX)the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic,[b] (AY)“O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.” The king answered and said to (AZ)the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be (BA)torn limb from limb, (BB)and your (BC)houses shall be laid in ruins. But if you show the dream and its interpretation, (BD)you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. (BE)Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.” They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.” The king answered and said, “I know with certainty that you are trying to (BF)gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm— if you do not make the dream known to me, (BG)there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till (BH)the times change. (BI)Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.” 10 (BJ)The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or (BK)Chaldean. 11 The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except (BL)the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

12 Because of this the king was angry and (BM)very furious, and (BN)commanded that all (BO)the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. 13 So the decree went out, and the wise men were about to be killed; and they sought (BP)Daniel and his companions, to kill them. 14 Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to (BQ)Arioch, the (BR)captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon. 15 He declared[c] to Arioch, the king's captain, “Why is the decree of the king (BS)so urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. 16 And Daniel went in and requested the king to appoint him a time, that he might show the interpretation to the king.

God Reveals Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to (BT)Hananiah, (BU)Mishael, and (BV)Azariah, his companions, 18 (BW)and told them to seek mercy from the (BX)God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not (BY)be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in (BZ)a vision of the night. Then Daniel (CA)blessed the (CB)God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said:

(CC)“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
    (CD)to whom belong wisdom and might.
21 (CE)He changes times and seasons;
    (CF)he removes kings and sets up kings;
(CG)he gives wisdom to the wise
    (CH)and knowledge to those who have understanding;
22 (CI)he reveals deep and hidden things;
    (CJ)he knows what is in the darkness,
    (CK)and the light dwells with him.
23 To you, O (CL)God of my fathers,
    (CM)I give thanks and praise,
for (CN)you have given me wisdom and might,
    and have now made known to me what (CO)we asked of you,
    for you have made known to us the king's matter.”

24 Therefore Daniel went in to (CP)Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said thus to him: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will show the king the interpretation.”

25 Then (CQ)Arioch brought in Daniel before the king (CR)in haste and said thus to him: “I have found (CS)among the exiles from Judah a man who will make known to the king the interpretation.” 26 The king declared to Daniel, (CT)whose name was Belteshazzar, (CU)“Are you able to make known to me the dream that I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, (CV)enchanters, (CW)magicians, or (CX)astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, 28 but (CY)there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar (CZ)what will be in the latter days. Your dream and (DA)the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: 29 To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, (DB)and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. 30 But (DC)as for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because of any wisdom that I have more than all the living, but in order that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that (DD)you may know the thoughts of your mind.

Daniel Interprets the Dream

31 “You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. 32 (DE)The head of this image was of fine gold, (DF)its chest and arms of silver, its middle and (DG)thighs of bronze, 33 (DH)its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 As you looked, a stone was cut out (DI)by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and (DJ)broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became (DK)like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that (DL)not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became (DM)a great mountain (DN)and filled the whole earth.

36 “This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. 37 You, O king, (DO)the king of kings, to whom (DP)the God of heaven (DQ)has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, (DR)the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are (DS)the head of gold. 39 (DT)Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom (DU)of bronze, (DV)which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And (DW)there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron (DX)breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall (DY)break and crush all these. 41 And as you saw (DZ)the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the (EA)firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage,[d] but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of those kings (EB)the God of heaven will set up (EC)a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. (ED)It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and (EE)it shall stand forever, 45 just as (EF)you saw that (EG)a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that (EH)it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A (EI)great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

Daniel Is Promoted

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar (EJ)fell upon his face and (EK)paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that (EL)an offering and (EM)incense be offered up to him. 47 The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your (EN)God is God of gods and (EO)Lord of kings, and (EP)a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.” 48 Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great (EQ)gifts, and made him ruler over the whole (ER)province of Babylon and (ES)chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Daniel made a request of the king, and he (ET)appointed (EU)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of (EV)the province of Babylon. But Daniel (EW)remained at the king's court.

Nebuchadnezzar's Golden Image

King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits[e] and its breadth six cubits. He set it up on (EX)the plain of Dura, in (EY)the province of Babylon. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather (EZ)the satraps, the prefects, and (FA)the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Then (FB)the satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And the herald (FC)proclaimed aloud, “You are commanded, O (FD)peoples, nations, and languages, that when you hear the (FE)sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you (FF)are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately (FG)be cast into a burning fiery furnace.” Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, all (FH)the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

The Fiery Furnace

Therefore at that time certain (FI)Chaldeans (FJ)came forward and maliciously accused the Jews. They declared[f] to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, (FK)have made a decree, that every man who (FL)hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, (FM)shall fall down and worship the golden image. 11 And whoever does not fall down and worship (FN)shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom you have (FO)appointed over the affairs of (FP)the province of Babylon: (FQ)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, (FR)pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar (FS)in furious rage commanded that (FT)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready when (FU)you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.[g] But if you do not worship, (FV)you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And (FW)who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”

16 (FX)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, (FY)our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.[h] 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was (FZ)filled with fury, and the expression of his face (GA)was changed against (GB)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army (GC)to bind (GD)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were (GE)bound in their cloaks, their tunics,[i] their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. 22 Because the king's order was (GF)urgent and the furnace overheated, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up (GG)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell (GH)bound into the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was (GI)astonished and rose up (GJ)in haste. He declared to his (GK)counselors, “Did we not cast three men (GL)bound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” 25 He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, (GM)walking in the midst of the fire, and they (GN)are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like (GO)a son of the gods.”

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, (GP)“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the (GQ)Most High God, come out, and come here!” Then (GR)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. 27 And the (GS)satraps, the prefects, the governors, and (GT)the king's counselors gathered together and saw that (GU)the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their (GV)cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. 28 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of (GW)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who (GX)has sent his angel and (GY)delivered his servants, who (GZ)trusted in him, and set aside[j] the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than (HA)serve and worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore (HB)I make a decree: Any (HC)people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of (HD)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (HE)shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” 30 Then the king promoted (HF)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in (HG)the province of Babylon.

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God

[k] King Nebuchadnezzar to all (HH)peoples, nations, and languages, (HI)that dwell in all the earth: (HJ)Peace be multiplied to you! It has seemed good to me to show the (HK)signs and wonders that the (HL)Most High God has done for me.

How great are (HM)his signs,
    how mighty his (HN)wonders!
(HO)His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    (HP)and his dominion endures from generation to generation.

Nebuchadnezzar's Second Dream

[l] I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and (HQ)the visions of my head alarmed me. So (HR)I made a decree that (HS)all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. Then (HT)the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but (HU)they could not make known to me its interpretation. At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named (HV)Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is (HW)the spirit of the holy gods[m]—and I told him the dream, saying, “O Belteshazzar, (HX)chief of the magicians, because I know that (HY)the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no (HZ)mystery is too difficult for you, tell me (IA)the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation. 10 (IB)The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and (IC)behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 (ID)The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. 12 (IE)Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. (IF)The beasts of the field found shade under it, and (IG)the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

13 “I saw in (IH)the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, (II)a watcher, (IJ)a holy one, came down from heaven. 14 He (IK)proclaimed aloud and said thus: (IL)‘Chop down the tree and (IM)lop off its branches, (IN)strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. (IO)Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. 15 But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him; (IP)and let seven periods of time (IQ)pass over him. 17 The sentence is by the decree of (IR)the watchers, the decision by the word of (IS)the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High (IT)rules the kingdom of men (IU)and gives it to whom he will and (IV)sets over it the lowliest of men.’ 18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O (IW)Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because (IX)all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for (IY)the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

Daniel Interprets the Second Dream

19 Then Daniel, whose name was (IZ)Belteshazzar, was (JA)dismayed for a while, and (JB)his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, (JC)may the dream be for those who hate you (JD)and its interpretation for your enemies! 20 (JE)The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, so that its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth, 21 (JF)whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which beasts of the field found shade, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens lived— 22 (JG)it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. (JH)Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, (JI)and your dominion to the ends of the earth. 23 And because the king saw (JJ)a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, (JK)‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till (JL)seven periods of time pass over him,’ 24 this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, 25 (JM)that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made (JN)to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and (JO)seven periods of time shall pass over you, till (JP)you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. 26 And as it was commanded (JQ)to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be confirmed for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by (JR)practicing righteousness, (JS)and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, (JT)that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”

Nebuchadnezzar's Humiliation

28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 and the king answered and said, (JU)“Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by (JV)my mighty power as a royal residence and for (JW)the glory of my majesty?” 31 (JX)While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, 32 (JY)and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, (JZ)until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” 33 Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. (KA)He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws.

Nebuchadnezzar Restored

34 (KB)At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and (KC)my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored (KD)him who lives forever,

(KE)for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    and (KF)his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
35 (KG)all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
    and (KH)he does according to his will among the host of heaven
    and among the inhabitants of the earth;
(KI)and none can stay his hand
    or (KJ)say to him, “What have you done?”

36 At the same time (KK)my reason returned to me, and for (KL)the glory of my kingdom, (KM)my majesty and splendor returned to me. (KN)My counselors and (KO)my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was (KP)added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, (KQ)praise and extol and honor the (KR)King of heaven, (KS)for all his works are right and his ways are just; and (KT)those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

The Handwriting on the Wall

(KU)King Belshazzar (KV)made a great feast for a thousand of his (KW)lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.

(KX)Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that (KY)the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father[n] had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. Then they brought in (KZ)the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. They drank wine and (LA)praised the (LB)gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

(LC)Immediately (LD)the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, opposite the lampstand. And the king saw (LE)the hand as it wrote. (LF)Then the king's color changed, (LG)and his thoughts alarmed him; (LH)his limbs gave way, and (LI)his knees knocked together. (LJ)The king called loudly to bring in (LK)the enchanters, the (LL)Chaldeans, and (LM)the astrologers. The king declared[o] to the wise men of Babylon, (LN)“Whoever reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck and (LO)shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.” Then all the king's wise men came in, but (LP)they could not read the writing or make known to the king the interpretation. Then King Belshazzar was greatly (LQ)alarmed, and his (LR)color changed, and his (LS)lords were perplexed.

10 The queen,[p] because of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banqueting hall, and the queen declared, (LT)“O king, live forever! Let not your thoughts alarm you (LU)or your color change. 11 There is a man in your kingdom (LV)in whom is the spirit of the holy gods.[q] In the days of your father, (LW)light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him, and King Nebuchadnezzar, your father—your father the king—(LX)made him chief of the magicians, (LY)enchanters, Chaldeans, and astrologers, 12 (LZ)because an excellent spirit, knowledge, and (MA)understanding (MB)to interpret dreams, explain riddles, and (MC)solve problems were found in this Daniel, (MD)whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

Daniel Interprets the Handwriting

13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king answered and said to Daniel, “You are that Daniel, one of (ME)the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought from Judah. 14 I have heard of you that (MF)the spirit of the gods[r] is in you, and that (MG)light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 Now (MH)the wise men, the (MI)enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but (MJ)they could not show the interpretation of the matter. 16 (MK)But I have heard that you can give interpretations and (ML)solve problems. (MM)Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, (MN)you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck and (MO)shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, (MP)“Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation. 18 O king, the (MQ)Most High God (MR)gave (MS)Nebuchadnezzar your father (MT)kingship and greatness and glory and majesty. 19 And because of the greatness that he gave him, (MU)all peoples, nations, and languages (MV)trembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled. 20 But (MW)when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, (MX)he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him. 21 (MY)He was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, (MZ)until he knew that the (NA)Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will. 22 And you his son,[s] (NB)Belshazzar, (NC)have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, 23 but you have lifted up yourself against (ND)the Lord of heaven. And (NE)the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. (NF)And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, (NG)but the God in whose hand is your breath, and (NH)whose are all your ways, (NI)you have not honored.

24 “Then from his presence (NJ)the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed. 25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin. 26 This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered[t] the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; 27 Tekel, (NK)you have been weighed[u] in the balances and found wanting; 28 Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to (NL)the Medes and (NM)Persians.”[v]

29 Then (NN)Belshazzar gave the command, and Daniel (NO)was clothed with purple, a chain of gold was put around his neck, and a proclamation was made about him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 (NP)That very night (NQ)Belshazzar the (NR)Chaldean king was killed. 31 [w] And (NS)Darius (NT)the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

Daniel and the Lions' Den

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom (NU)120 (NV)satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom; and over them (NW)three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these (NX)satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss. Then this Daniel became (NY)distinguished above all (NZ)the other high officials and (OA)satraps, because (OB)an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned (OC)to set him over the whole kingdom. Then (OD)the high officials and (OE)the satraps (OF)sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, (OG)but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, (OH)and no error or fault was found in him. Then these men said, “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.”

Then these (OI)high officials and (OJ)satraps came by agreement[x] to the king and said to him, “O (OK)King Darius, live forever! All the (OL)high officials of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the (OM)counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an (ON)injunction, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. Now, O king, establish (OO)the injunction and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to (OP)the law of (OQ)the Medes and the Persians, (OR)which cannot be revoked.” Therefore King Darius signed the document and (OS)injunction.

10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where (OT)he had windows in his upper chamber open (OU)toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees (OV)three times a day and prayed and (OW)gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. 11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God. 12 Then they (OX)came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, “O king! Did you not sign (OY)an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of (OZ)the Medes and Persians, (PA)which cannot be revoked.” 13 Then they answered and said before the king, (PB)“Daniel, who is one (PC)of the exiles (PD)from Judah, (PE)pays no attention to you, O king, or (PF)the injunction you have signed, but makes his petition (PG)three times a day.”

14 Then (PH)the king, when he heard these words, (PI)was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him. 15 Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no (PJ)injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”

16 Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared[y] to Daniel, “May (PK)your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” 17 (PL)And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, (PM)and the king sealed it (PN)with his own signet and with the signet of his (PO)lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; (PP)no diversions were brought to him, and (PQ)sleep fled from him.

19 Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions. 20 As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of (PR)the living God, (PS)has your God, whom you serve continually, (PT)been able to deliver you from the lions?” 21 Then Daniel said to the king, (PU)“O king, live forever! 22 My God (PV)sent his angel (PW)and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless (PX)before him; (PY)and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” 23 Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and (PZ)no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and (QA)those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions—they, their children, and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all (QB)the peoples, nations, and languages (QC)that dwell in all the earth: (QD)“Peace be multiplied to you. 26 (QE)I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion (QF)people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel,

for (QG)he is (QH)the living God,
    enduring forever;
his kingdom shall never be destroyed,
    (QI)and his dominion shall be (QJ)to the end.
27 He delivers and rescues;
    he works (QK)signs and wonders
    in heaven and on earth,
he who has (QL)saved Daniel
    from the power of the lions.”

28 So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and (QM)the reign of (QN)Cyrus the Persian.

Daniel's Vision of the Four Beasts

In the first year of (QO)Belshazzar king of Babylon, (QP)Daniel saw a dream and (QQ)visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. Daniel declared,[z] “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, (QR)the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts (QS)came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion and had eagles' wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. And behold, (QT)another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ After this I looked, and behold, another, like a (QU)leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and (QV)dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, (QW)terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; (QX)it devoured and broke in pieces (QY)and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and (QZ)it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, (RA)there came up among them another horn, a little one, (RB)before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and (RC)a mouth speaking great things.

The Ancient of Days Reigns

“As I looked,

(RD)thrones were placed,
    and the (RE)Ancient of Days took his seat;
(RF)his clothing was white as snow,
    and (RG)the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames;
    (RH)its wheels were burning fire.
10 (RI)A stream of fire issued
    and came out from before him;
(RJ)a thousand thousands (RK)served him,
    (RL)and ten thousand times ten thousand (RM)stood before him;
the (RN)court sat in judgment,
    and (RO)the books were opened.

11 “I looked then because of the sound of (RP)the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, (RQ)the beast was killed, and its body destroyed (RR)and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, (RS)their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

The Son of Man Is Given Dominion

13 “I saw in the night visions,

and (RT)behold, with the clouds of heaven
    there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the (RU)Ancient of Days
    and was presented before him.
14 (RV)And to him was given dominion
    and glory and a kingdom,
that all (RW)peoples, nations, and languages
    should serve him;
(RX)his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
    that shall not be destroyed.

Daniel's Vision Interpreted

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me[aa] was anxious, and (RY)the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 (RZ)‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But (SA)the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’

19 “Then I desired to know the truth about (SB)the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 (SC)and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn (SD)made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the (SE)Ancient of Days came, and (SF)judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when (SG)the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 “Thus he said: ‘As for (SH)the fourth beast,

there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
    which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
    and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
24 As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
    and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
    and shall put down three kings.
25 (SI)He shall speak words against the Most High,
    and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
    and shall think to (SJ)change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
    for (SK)a time, times, and half a time.
26 (SL)But the court shall sit in judgment,
    and (SM)his dominion shall be taken away,
    to be consumed and destroyed (SN)to the end.
27 (SO)And the kingdom and the dominion
    and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
    shall be given to the people of (SP)the saints of the Most High;
(SQ)his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
    and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’[ab]

28 “Here is the end of the matter. (SR)As for me, Daniel, my (SS)thoughts greatly alarmed me, (ST)and my color changed, but (SU)I kept the matter in my heart.”

Daniel's Vision of the Ram and the Goat

In the third year of the reign of (SV)King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, (SW)after that which appeared to me (SX)at the first. And I saw in the vision; and when I saw, I was in (SY)Susa the citadel, which is in the province of (SZ)Elam. And (TA)I saw in the vision, (TB)and I was at the (TC)Ulai canal. I raised my eyes and saw, and behold, (TD)a ram standing on the bank of the canal. It had two horns, and both horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. I saw (TE)the ram charging westward and northward and southward. No (TF)beast (TG)could stand before him, (TH)and there was no one who could rescue from his power. (TI)He did as he pleased and (TJ)became great.

As I was considering, behold, a (TK)male goat came from the west across the face of the whole earth, without touching the ground. And the goat had (TL)a conspicuous horn between his eyes. He came to (TM)the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal, (TN)and he ran at him in his powerful wrath. I saw him come close to the ram, (TO)and he was enraged against him and struck the ram and broke his two horns. (TP)And the ram had no power to stand before him, but he (TQ)cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. And there was no one who could rescue the ram from his power. Then (TR)the goat (TS)became exceedingly great, but when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and instead of it there came up four (TT)conspicuous horns toward (TU)the four winds of heaven.

Out of one of them came (TV)a little horn, which grew exceedingly great toward (TW)the south, toward the east, and toward (TX)the glorious land. 10 (TY)It grew great, (TZ)even to the host of heaven. And some of the host (UA)and some[ac] of (UB)the stars it threw down to the ground and (UC)trampled on them. 11 (UD)It became great, even as great as (UE)the Prince of the host. (UF)And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. 12 And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression,[ad] and it will throw truth to the ground, and (UG)it will act and prosper. 13 Then I heard (UH)a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, (UI)“For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, (UJ)the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” 14 And he said to me,[ae] “For 2,300 (UK)evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

The Interpretation of the Vision

15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I (UL)sought to understand it. And behold, there stood before me one having (UM)the appearance of a man. 16 (UN)And I heard a man's voice (UO)between the banks of the (UP)Ulai, and it called, (UQ)“Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where I stood. And when he came, (UR)I was frightened (US)and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, (UT)O son of man, that the vision is for (UU)the time of the end.”

18 And when he had spoken to me, (UV)I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground. But (UW)he touched me and made me stand up. 19 He said, “Behold, I will make known to you what shall be at the latter end of (UX)the indignation, for it refers to (UY)the appointed time of the end. 20 As for (UZ)the ram that you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of (VA)Media and Persia. 21 And (VB)the goat[af] is the king of Greece. And (VC)the great horn between his eyes is (VD)the first king. 22 (VE)As for the horn that was broken, in place of which four others arose, four kingdoms shall arise from his[ag] nation, (VF)but not with his power. 23 And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressors have reached their limit, a king of bold face, one who understands riddles, shall arise. 24 His power shall be great—(VG)but not by his own power; and he shall cause fearful destruction (VH)and shall succeed in what he does, (VI)and destroy mighty men and the people who are the saints. 25 (VJ)By his cunning he shall make deceit prosper under his hand, and in his own mind (VK)he shall become great. (VL)Without warning he shall destroy many. And he (VM)shall even rise up against the Prince of princes, and he shall be broken—but (VN)by no human hand. 26 The vision of (VO)the evenings and the mornings that has been told (VP)is true, but (VQ)seal up the vision, (VR)for it refers to many days from now.”

Daniel’s Training in Babylon

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim(A) king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon(C) came to Jerusalem and besieged it.(D) And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried(E) off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.(F)

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility(G) young men without any physical defect, handsome,(H) showing aptitude for every kind of learning,(I) well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language(J) and literature of the Babylonians.[b] The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine(K) from the king’s table.(L) They were to be trained for three years,(M) and after that they were to enter the king’s service.(N)

Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel,(O) Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(P) The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar;(Q) to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.(R)

But Daniel resolved not to defile(S) himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor(T) and compassion(U) to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink.(V) Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test(W) your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”(X) 14 So he agreed to this and tested(Y) them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.(Z) 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.(AA)

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding(AB) of all kinds of literature and learning.(AC) And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.(AD)

18 At the end of the time(AE) set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.(AF) 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians(AG) and enchanters in his whole kingdom.(AH)

21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.(AI)

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams;(AJ) his mind was troubled(AK) and he could not sleep.(AL) So the king summoned the magicians,(AM) enchanters, sorcerers(AN) and astrologers[d](AO) to tell him what he had dreamed.(AP) When they came in and stood before the king, he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(AQ) me and I want to know what it means.[e]

Then the astrologers answered the king,[f](AR) “May the king live forever!(AS) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(AT) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(AU) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(AV) But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(AW) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”

Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(AX) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(AY)

10 The astrologers(AZ) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(BA) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(BB) and they do not live among humans.”

12 This made the king so angry and furious(BC) that he ordered the execution(BD) of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.(BE)

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.

17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(BF) 18 He urged them to plead for mercy(BG) from the God of heaven(BH) concerning this mystery,(BI) so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery(BJ) was revealed to Daniel in a vision.(BK) Then Daniel praised the God of heaven(BL) 20 and said:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;(BM)
    wisdom and power(BN) are his.
21 He changes times and seasons;(BO)
    he deposes(BP) kings and raises up others.(BQ)
He gives wisdom(BR) to the wise
    and knowledge to the discerning.(BS)
22 He reveals deep and hidden things;(BT)
    he knows what lies in darkness,(BU)
    and light(BV) dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:(BW)
    You have given me wisdom(BX) and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
    you have made known to us the dream of the king.(BY)

Daniel Interprets the Dream

24 Then Daniel went to Arioch,(BZ) whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”

25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles(CA) from Judah(CB) who can tell the king what his dream means.”

26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar),(CC) “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”

27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,(CD) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.(CE) He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.(CF) Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind(CG) as you were lying in bed(CH) are these:(CI)

29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.(CJ) 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed(CK) to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue,(CL) awesome(CM) in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.(CN) It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed(CO) them.(CP) 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away(CQ) without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain(CR) and filled the whole earth.(CS)

36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.(CT) 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings.(CU) The God of heaven has given you dominion(CV) and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all.(CW) You are that head of gold.

39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.(CX) 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.(CY) 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush(CZ) all those kingdoms(DA) and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.(DB) 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock(DC) cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands(DD)—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.

“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.(DE) The dream is true(DF) and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate(DG) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering(DH) and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods(DI) and the Lord of kings(DJ) and a revealer of mysteries,(DK) for you were able to reveal this mystery.(DL)

48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high(DM) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.(DN) 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon,(DO) while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.(DP)

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace

King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(DQ) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[g] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. He then summoned the satraps,(DR) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(DS) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(DT) this is what you are commanded to do: As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(DU) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(DV) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(DW) Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(DX)

Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(DY)

At this time some astrologers[h](DZ) came forward and denounced the Jews. They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(EA) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(EB) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(EC) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(ED)—who pay no attention(EE) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(EF)

13 Furious(EG) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(EH) or worship the image(EI) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(EJ) will be able to rescue(EK) you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(EL) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(EM) us from it, and he will deliver(EN) us[i] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(EO)

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(EP) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(EQ) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(ER) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(ES) come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(ET) crowded around them.(EU) They saw that the fire(EV) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(EW) and rescued(EX) his servants! They trusted(EY) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(EZ) 29 Therefore I decree(FA) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(FB) for no other god can save(FC) in this way.”

30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(FD)

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Tree

[j]King Nebuchadnezzar,

To the nations and peoples of every language,(FE) who live in all the earth:

May you prosper greatly!(FF)

It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs(FG) and wonders that the Most High God(FH) has performed for me.

How great are his signs,
    how mighty his wonders!(FI)
His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
    his dominion endures(FJ) from generation to generation.

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented(FK) and prosperous. I had a dream(FL) that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed,(FM) the images and visions that passed through my mind(FN) terrified me.(FO) So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret(FP) the dream for me. When the magicians,(FQ) enchanters, astrologers[k] and diviners(FR) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.(FS) Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,(FT) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods(FU) is in him.)

I said, “Belteshazzar, chief(FV) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods(FW) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:(FX) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.(FY) 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.(FZ) 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches;(GA) from it every creature was fed.

13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed,(GB) I looked, and there before me was a holy one,(GC) a messenger,[l] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree(GD) and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.(GE) 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

“‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times[m] pass by for him.(GF)

17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High(GG) is sovereign(GH) over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest(GI) of people.’

18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.(GJ) But you can,(GK) because the spirit of the holy gods(GL) is in you.”(GM)

Daniel Interprets the Dream

19 Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified(GN) him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning alarm you.”(GO)

Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries! 20 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth, 21 with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds(GP) 22 Your Majesty, you are that tree!(GQ) You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.(GR)

23 “Your Majesty saw a holy one,(GS) a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.’(GT)

24 “This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree(GU) the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched(GV) with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High(GW) is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.(GX) 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots(GY) means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.(GZ) 27 Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.(HA) It may be that then your prosperity(HB) will continue.(HC)

The Dream Is Fulfilled

28 All this happened(HD) to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory(HE) of my majesty?”(HF)

31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you.(HG) 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”(HH)

33 Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched(HI) with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.(HJ)

34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity(HK) was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.(HL)

His dominion is an eternal dominion;
    his kingdom(HM) endures from generation to generation.(HN)
35 All the peoples of the earth
    are regarded as nothing.(HO)
He does as he pleases(HP)
    with the powers of heaven
    and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back(HQ) his hand(HR)
    or say to him: “What have you done?”(HS)

36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.(HT) My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt(HU) and glorify(HV) the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.(HW) And those who walk in pride(HX) he is able to humble.(HY)

The Writing on the Wall

King Belshazzar(HZ) gave a great banquet(IA) for a thousand of his nobles(IB) and drank wine with them. While Belshazzar was drinking(IC) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets(ID) that Nebuchadnezzar his father[n] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines(IE) might drink from them.(IF) So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. As they drank the wine, they praised the gods(IG) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.(IH)

Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale(II) and he was so frightened(IJ) that his legs became weak(IK) and his knees were knocking.(IL)

The king summoned the enchanters,(IM) astrologers[o](IN) and diviners.(IO) Then he said to these wise(IP) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(IQ) and he will be made the third(IR) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(IS)

Then all the king’s wise men(IT) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(IU) So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(IV) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.

10 The queen,[p] hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!”(IW) she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods(IX) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom(IY) like that of the gods.(IZ) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.(JA) 12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar,(JB) was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles(JC) and solve difficult problems.(JD) Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.(JE)

13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(JF) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(JG) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(JH) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(JI) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(JJ) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(JK) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(JL)

17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(JM) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(JN) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(JO) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(JP) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(JQ) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(JR) he was deposed from his royal throne(JS) and stripped(JT) of his glory.(JU) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(JV) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(JW)

22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[q] have not humbled(JX) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(JY) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(JZ) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(KA) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(KB) and all your ways.(KC) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

25 “This is the inscription that was written:

mene, mene, tekel, parsin

26 “Here is what these words mean:

Mene[r]: God has numbered the days(KD) of your reign and brought it to an end.(KE)

27 Tekel[s]: You have been weighed on the scales(KF) and found wanting.(KG)

28 Peres[t]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(KH) and Persians.”(KI)

29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(KJ) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(KK)

30 That very night Belshazzar,(KL) king(KM) of the Babylonians,[u] was slain,(KN) 31 and Darius(KO) the Mede(KP) took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.[v]

Daniel in the Den of Lions

[w]It pleased Darius(KQ) to appoint 120 satraps(KR) to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(KS) The satraps were made accountable(KT) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(KU) At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(KV) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(KW)

So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(KX) The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(KY) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(KZ) Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(LA) So King Darius put the decree in writing.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(LB) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(LC) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(LD) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(LE) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(LF)

13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(LG) pays no attention(LH) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(LI) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(LJ)

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(LK) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(LL) you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(LM) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(LN) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(LO)

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(LP)

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(LQ) 22 My God sent his angel,(LR) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(LS) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(LT) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(LU) was found on him, because he had trusted(LV) in his God.

24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(LW) along with their wives and children.(LX) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(LY)

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(LZ) in all the earth:

“May you prosper greatly!(MA)

26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(MB) the God of Daniel.(MC)

“For he is the living God(MD)
    and he endures forever;(ME)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
    his dominion will never end.(MF)
27 He rescues and he saves;(MG)
    he performs signs and wonders(MH)
    in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
    from the power of the lions.”(MI)

28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[x](MJ) the Persian.(MK)

Daniel’s Dream of Four Beasts

In the first year of Belshazzar(ML) king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions(MM) passed through his mind(MN) as he was lying in bed.(MO) He wrote(MP) down the substance of his dream.

Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven(MQ) churning up the great sea. Four great beasts,(MR) each different from the others, came up out of the sea.

“The first was like a lion,(MS) and it had the wings of an eagle.(MT) I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.

“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’(MU)

“After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard.(MV) And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.

“After that, in my vision(MW) at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron(MX) teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled(MY) underfoot whatever was left.(MZ) It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.(NA)

“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little(NB) one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being(NC) and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(ND)

“As I looked,

“thrones were set in place,
    and the Ancient of Days(NE) took his seat.(NF)
His clothing was as white as snow;(NG)
    the hair of his head was white like wool.(NH)
His throne was flaming with fire,
    and its wheels(NI) were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire(NJ) was flowing,
    coming out from before him.(NK)
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
    ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
    and the books(NL) were opened.

11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.(NM) I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.(NN) 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[y](NO) coming(NP) with the clouds of heaven.(NQ) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(NR) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(NS) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(NT) is one that will never be destroyed.(NU)

The Interpretation of the Dream

15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(NV) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.

“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(NW) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people(NX) of the Most High will receive the kingdom(NY) and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’(NZ)

19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns(OA) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(OB) 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,(OC) 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.(OD)

23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.(OE) 24 The ten horns(OF) are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High(OG) and oppress his holy people(OH) and try to change the set times(OI) and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.[z](OJ)

26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed(OK) forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms(OL) under heaven will be handed over to the holy people(OM) of the Most High.(ON) His kingdom will be an everlasting(OO) kingdom, and all rulers will worship(OP) and obey him.’

28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled(OQ) by my thoughts,(OR) and my face turned pale,(OS) but I kept the matter to myself.”

Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat

In the third year of King Belshazzar’s(OT) reign, I, Daniel, had a vision,(OU) after the one that had already appeared to me. In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa(OV) in the province of Elam;(OW) in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal. I looked up,(OX) and there before me was a ram(OY) with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later. I watched the ram as it charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against it, and none could rescue from its power.(OZ) It did as it pleased(PA) and became great.

As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground. It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage. I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it,(PB) and none could rescue the ram from its power.(PC) The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off,(PD) and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.(PE)

Out of one of them came another horn, which started small(PF) but grew in power to the south and to the east and toward the Beautiful Land.(PG) 10 It grew until it reached(PH) the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth(PI) and trampled(PJ) on them. 11 It set itself up to be as great as the commander(PK) of the army of the Lord;(PL) it took away the daily sacrifice(PM) from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down.(PN) 12 Because of rebellion, the Lord’s people[aa] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.(PO)

13 Then I heard a holy one(PP) speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled(PQ)—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot(PR) of the Lord’s people?”

14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”(PS)

The Interpretation of the Vision

15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision(PT) and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.(PU) 16 And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai(PV) calling, “Gabriel,(PW) tell this man the meaning of the vision.”(PX)

17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate.(PY) “Son of man,”[ab] he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”(PZ)

18 While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground.(QA) Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.(QB)

19 He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath,(QC) because the vision concerns the appointed time(QD) of the end.[ac](QE) 20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.(QF) 21 The shaggy goat is the king of Greece,(QG) and the large horn between its eyes is the first king.(QH) 22 The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.

23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. 24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people.(QI) 25 He will cause deceit(QJ) to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes.(QK) Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power.(QL)

26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true,(QM) but seal(QN) up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”(QO)
