¹³ So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?^(A)

¹³ Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,^(A) pays no attention^(B) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”

¹¹ There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods^(A) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom^(B) like that of the gods.^(C) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.^(D)

²⁵ Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles^(A) from Judah^(B) who can tell the king what his dream means.”

³ Jesus’ brothers^(A) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.

¹⁶ So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases,

The Passover

¹⁹ On the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover.^{(A) 20} The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially clean. The Levites slaughtered^(B) the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives the priests and for themselves.

¹⁶ Then the people of Israel—the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the dedication^(A) of the house of God with joy.

Opposition to the Rebuilding

4 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building^(A) a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel,
