The Wilderness Years

“Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, (A)as the Lord told me. And for many days we traveled around Mount Seir. Then the Lord said to me, ‘You have been traveling around this mountain country (B)long enough. Turn northward and command the people, “You are about to pass through the territory of (C)your brothers, the people of Esau, (D)who live in Seir; and (E)they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because (F)I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. (G)You shall purchase food from them with money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink. For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. (H)He knows your going through this great wilderness. (I)These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”’ So (J)we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir, away from (K)the Arabah road from (L)Elath and (M)Ezion-geber.

“And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab. And the Lord said to me, (N)‘Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given (O)Ar to (P)the people of Lot for a possession.’ 10 ((Q)The Emim formerly lived there, (R)a people great and many, and tall (S)as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim they are also counted as (T)Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 (U)The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the people of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, (V)as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the Lord gave to them.) 13 ‘Now rise up and go over (W)the brook Zered.’ So we went over (X)the brook Zered. 14 And the time from our leaving (Y)Kadesh-barnea until we crossed (Z)the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, (AA)until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them. 15 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.

16 “So as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 ‘Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar. 19 And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, (AB)do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (AC)the sons of Lot for a possession.’ 20 (It is also counted as a land of (AD)Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim— 21 (AE)a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites,[a] and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed (AF)the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. 23 As for (AG)the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as (AH)Gaza, (AI)the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.) 24 ‘Rise up, set out on your journey and (AJ)go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of (AK)Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and (AL)contend with him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put (AM)the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

The Defeat of King Sihon

26 “So I sent messengers from the wilderness of (AN)Kedemoth to Sihon the king of (AO)Heshbon, (AP)with words of peace, saying, 27 (AQ)‘Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. 28 (AR)You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29 (AS)as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.’ 30 But (AT)Sihon the king of (AU)Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God (AV)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ 32 Then (AW)Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 And (AX)the Lord our God gave him over to us, and (AY)we defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction[b] every (AZ)city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 (BA)From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from (BB)the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. (BC)The Lord our God gave all into our hands. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river (BD)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

The Defeat of King Og

“Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And (BE)Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at (BF)Edrei. But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to (BG)Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, (BH)and we struck him down until he had no survivor left. And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, (BI)the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. And (BJ)we devoted them to destruction,[c] as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every (BK)city, men, women, and children. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder. So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon (the Sidonians call (BL)Hermon (BM)Sirion, while the Amorites call it (BN)Senir), 10 all the cities of the (BO)tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as (BP)Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For (BQ)only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of (BR)the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in (BS)Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits[d] was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the (BT)common cubit.[e])

12 “When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning (BU)at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with (BV)its cities. 13 (BW)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, (BX)all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of (BY)Rephaim. 14 (BZ)Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of (CA)the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages (CB)after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 To Machir (CC)I gave Gilead, 16 and to the Reubenites (CD)and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, (CE)the border of the Ammonites; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from (CF)Chinnereth as far as (CG)the Sea of the Arabah, (CH)the Salt Sea, under (CI)the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

18 “And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. (CJ)All your men of valor shall cross over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel. 19 Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (CK)(I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in the cities that I have given you, 20 (CL)until the Lord gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also occupy the land that the Lord your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded (CM)Joshua at that time, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So will the Lord do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. 22 You shall not fear them, for it is (CN)the Lord your God who fights for you.’

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

23 “And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant (CO)your greatness and your mighty hand. For (CP)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? 25 Please let me go over and see (CQ)the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and (CR)Lebanon.’ 26 But (CS)the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, (CT)‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. 27 (CU)Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan. 28 But (CV)charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.’ 29 So we remained in (CW)the valley opposite Beth-peor.

Wanderings in the Wilderness

Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea,[a](A) as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.(B)

Then the Lord said to me, “You have made your way around this hill country long enough;(C) now turn north. Give the people these orders:(D) ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau,(E) who live in Seir.(F) They will be afraid(G) of you, but be very careful. Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.(H) You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”

The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched(I) over your journey through this vast wilderness.(J) These forty years(K) the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.(L)

So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from(M) the Arabah(N) road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber,(O) and traveled along the desert road of Moab.(P)

Then the Lord said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar(Q) to the descendants of Lot(R) as a possession.”

10 (The Emites(S) used to live there—a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.(T) 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites,(U) but the Moabites called them Emites. 12 Horites(V) used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did(W) in the land the Lord gave them as their possession.)

13 And the Lord said, “Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.(X)” So we crossed the valley.

14 Thirty-eight years(Y) passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea(Z) until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation(AA) of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.(AB) 15 The Lord’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated(AC) them from the camp.

16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, 17 the Lord said to me, 18 “Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar.(AD) 19 When you come to the Ammonites,(AE) do not harass them or provoke them to war,(AF) for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.(AG)

20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites,(AH) who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.(AI) The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. 22 The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir,(AJ) when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. 23 And as for the Avvites(AK) who lived in villages as far as Gaza,(AL) the Caphtorites(AM) coming out from Caphtor[b](AN) destroyed them and settled in their place.)

Defeat of Sihon King of Heshbon

24 “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge.(AO) See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite,(AP) king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage(AQ) him in battle. 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror(AR) and fear(AS) of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble(AT) and be in anguish because of you.”

26 From the Desert of Kedemoth(AU) I sent messengers to Sihon(AV) king of Heshbon offering peace(AW) and saying, 27 “Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left.(AX) 28 Sell us food to eat(AY) and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot(AZ) 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us—until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.” 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord(BA) your God had made his spirit stubborn(BB) and his heart obstinate(BC) in order to give him into your hands,(BD) as he has now done.

31 The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”(BE)

32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle(BF) at Jahaz, 33 the Lord our God delivered(BG) him over to us and we struck him down,(BH) together with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed[c](BI) them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35 But the livestock(BJ) and the plunder(BK) from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36 From Aroer(BL) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead,(BM) not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave(BN) us all of them. 37 But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God,(BO) you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites,(BP) neither the land along the course of the Jabbok(BQ) nor that around the towns in the hills.

Defeat of Og King of Bashan

Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(BR) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(BS) The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(BT) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(BU) leaving no survivors.(BV) At that time we took all his cities.(BW) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(BX) in Bashan.(BY) All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed[d] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[e](BZ) every city—men, women and children. But all the livestock(CA) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites(CB) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.(CC) (Hermon is called Sirion(CD) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)(CE) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah(CF) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites.(CG) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[f] It is still in Rabbah(CH) of the Ammonites.)

Division of the Land

12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer(CI) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh.(CJ) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites.(CK) 14 Jair,(CL) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites;(CM) it was named(CN) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.[g]) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir.(CO) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,(CP) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah,(CQ) from Kinnereth(CR) to the Sea of the Arabah(CS) (that is, the Dead Sea(CT)), below the slopes of Pisgah.

18 I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given(CU) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites.(CV) 19 However, your wives,(CW) your children and your livestock(CX) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”

Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid(CY) of them;(CZ) the Lord your God himself will fight(DA) for you.”

23 At that time I pleaded(DB) with the Lord: 24 “Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness(DC) and your strong hand. For what god(DD) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works(DE) you do?(DF) 25 Let me go over and see the good land(DG) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.(DH)

26 But because of you the Lord was angry(DI) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah(DJ) and look west and north and south and east.(DK) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross(DL) this Jordan.(DM) 28 But commission(DN) Joshua, and encourage(DO) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across(DP) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.(DQ)

The Twelve Apostles

12 In these days (A)he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (B)he called his disciples (C)and (D)chose from them twelve, whom he named (E)apostles: 14 Simon, (F)whom he named Peter, and (G)Andrew his brother, and (H)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and (I)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called (J)the Zealot, 16 and (K)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And (L)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (M)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of (N)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (O)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (P)sought to touch him, for (Q)power came out from him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And (R)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (S)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for (T)yours is the kingdom of God.

21 (U)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

(V)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when (W)people hate you and when they (X)exclude you and revile you and (Y)spurn your name as evil, (Z)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (AA)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (AB)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 (AC)“But woe to you who are rich, (AD)for you (AE)have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (AF)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to (AG)you who laugh now, (AH)for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, (AI)when all people speak well of you, for (AJ)so their fathers did to (AK)the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (AL)Love your enemies, (AM)do good to those who hate you, 28 (AN)bless those who curse you, (AO)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (AP)To one who (AQ)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[a] either. 30 (AR)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (AS)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 (AT)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (AU)if you (AV)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (AW)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (AX)you will be sons of (AY)the Most High, for (AZ)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (BA)Be merciful, even as (BB)your Father is merciful.

Judging Others

37 (BC)(BD)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (BE)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (BF)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (BG)into your lap. For (BH)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

The Twelve Apostles(A)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(B) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(C) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(D) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(E)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(F) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(G) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(H)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(I)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(J)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(K)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(L) and insult you(M)
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.(N)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(O) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(P)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(Q)
for you have already received your comfort.(R)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(S)
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.(T)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(U)

Love for Enemies(V)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(W) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(X) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(Y) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(Z)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(AA) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(AB) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(AC) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(AD) of the Most High,(AE) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(AF) just as your Father(AG) is merciful.

Judging Others(AH)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(AI) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(AJ) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. Make Your Face Shine upon Us

To the choirmaster: with (A)stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

67 May God (B)be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to (C)shine upon us, Selah
that (D)your way may be known on earth,
your (E)saving power among all nations.
(F)Let the peoples praise you, O God;
