See to it that no one takes you captive by (A)philosophy and (B)empty deceit, according to (C)human tradition, according to the (D)elemental spirits[a] of the world, and not according to Christ. For (E)in him the whole fullness of deity dwells (F)bodily, 10 and (G)you have been filled in him, who is (H)the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also (I)you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by (J)putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 (K)having been buried with him in baptism, in which (L)you were also raised with him through faith in (M)the powerful working of God, (N)who raised him from the dead. 13 (O)And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God (P)made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by (Q)canceling (R)the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 (S)He disarmed the rulers and authorities[b] and (T)put them to open shame, by (U)triumphing over them in him.[c]

Let No One Disqualify You

16 Therefore let no one (V)pass judgment on you (W)in questions of food and drink, or with regard to (X)a festival or (Y)a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 (Z)These are a shadow of the things to come, but (AA)the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one (AB)disqualify you, (AC)insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, (AD)going on in detail about visions,[d] (AE)puffed up without reason by (AF)his sensuous mind, 19 and (AG)not (AH)holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

20 If with Christ (AI)you died to the (AJ)elemental spirits of the world, (AK)why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 (AL)“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 ((AM)referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to (AN)human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in (AO)promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are (AP)of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

Put On the New Self

(AQ)If then you have been raised with Christ, seek (AR)the things that are above, where Christ is, (AS)seated at the right hand of God. (AT)Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For (AU)you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ (AV)who is your[e] life (AW)appears, then you also will appear with him (AX)in glory.

(AY)Put to death therefore (AZ)what is earthly in you:[f] (BA)sexual immorality, impurity, (BB)passion, evil desire, and covetousness, (BC)which is idolatry. (BD)On account of these the wrath of God is coming.[g] (BE)In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now (BF)you must put them all away: (BG)anger, wrath, malice, (BH)slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. (BI)Do not lie to one another, seeing that (BJ)you have put off (BK)the old self[h] with its practices 10 and (BL)have put on (BM)the new self, (BN)which is being renewed in knowledge (BO)after the image of (BP)its creator. 11 (BQ)Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,[i] free; but Christ is (BR)all, and in all.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,(A) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world(B) rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness(C) of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head(D) over every power and authority.(E) 11 In him you were also circumcised(F) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[b](G) was put off when you were circumcised by[c] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(H) in which you were also raised with him(I) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(J)

13 When you were dead in your sins(K) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[d] alive(L) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,(M) 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,(N) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.(O) 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,(P) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them(Q) by the cross.[e]

Freedom From Human Rules

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(R) by what you eat or drink,(S) or with regard to a religious festival,(T) a New Moon celebration(U) or a Sabbath day.(V) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(W) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(X) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(Y) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(Z) from whom the whole body,(AA) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(AB)

20 Since you died with Christ(AC) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,(AD) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:(AE) 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish(AF) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.(AG) 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility(AH) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,(AI) set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(AJ) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.(AK) For you died,(AL) and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[f] life,(AM) appears,(AN) then you also will appear with him in glory.(AO)

Put to death,(AP) therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:(AQ) sexual immorality,(AR) impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,(AS) which is idolatry.(AT) Because of these, the wrath of God(AU) is coming.[g] You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.(AV) But now you must also rid yourselves(AW) of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander,(AX) and filthy language from your lips.(AY) Do not lie to each other,(AZ) since you have taken off your old self(BA) with its practices 10 and have put on the new self,(BB) which is being renewed(BC) in knowledge in the image of its Creator.(BD) 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew,(BE) circumcised or uncircumcised,(BF) barbarian, Scythian, slave or free,(BG) but Christ is all,(BH) and is in all.
