⁴ Hear this, you who trample the needy
    and do away with the poor^(A) of the land,^(B)

¹¹ You levy a straw tax on the poor^(A)
    and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,^(B)
    you will not live in them;^(C)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
    you will not drink their wine.^(D)

¹⁴ those whose teeth^(A) are swords
    and whose jaws are set with knives^(B)
to devour^(C) the poor^(D) from the earth
    and the needy from among mankind.^(E)

⁴ Do all these evildoers know nothing?^(A)

They devour my people^(B) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.^(C)

⁶ For fools speak folly,^(A)
    their hearts are bent on evil:^(B)
They practice ungodliness^(C)
    and spread error^(D) concerning the Lord;
the hungry they leave empty^(E)
    and from the thirsty they withhold water.
⁷ Scoundrels use wicked methods,^(F)
    they make up evil schemes^(G)
to destroy the poor with lies,
    even when the plea of the needy^(H) is just.^(I)

“For three sins of Israel,
    even for four, I will not relent.^(A)
They sell the innocent for silver,
    and the needy for a pair of sandals.^(B)
7 They trample on the heads of the poor
    as on the dust of the ground
    and deny justice to the oppressed.
Father and son use the same girl
    and so profane my holy name.^(C)

¹² I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor^(A)
    and upholds the cause^(B) of the needy.^(C)

⁵ “Because the poor are plundered^(A) and the needy groan,^(B)
    I will now arise,^(C)” says the Lord.
    “I will protect them^(D) from those who malign them.”
