¹³ When they saw the courage of Peter and John^(A) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,^(B) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.^{(C) 14} But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.

²¹ But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

²⁴ The Jews^(A) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”^(B)

²⁵ Jesus answered, “I did tell you,^(C) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,^(D)

²⁵ “Though I have been speaking figuratively,^(A) a time is coming^(B) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. ²⁶ In that day you will ask in my name.^(C) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. ²⁷ No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me^(D) and have believed that I came from God.^{(E) 28} I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”^(F)

²⁹ Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.^{(G) 30} Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe^(H) that you came from God.”^(I)

³¹ “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied.

² Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;^(A) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.^(B) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience^(C) in the sight of God.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

¹¹ Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,^(A) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.^(B)
