⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, ^(A)“By what power or by what name have you done this?”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned^(A)

^23 (B)Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and ^(C)said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”

²⁸ And they said to Him, “By what ^(A)authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?”

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him, and when they had ^(A)called for the apostles ^(B)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, ²⁸ saying, ^(A)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, ^(B)and intend to bring this Man’s ^(C)blood on us!”

¹⁸ So the Jews answered and said to Him, ^(A)“What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”

¹⁰ let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, ^(A)that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, ^(B)whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

¹⁴ Then he said, ^(A)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

So Moses ^(B)feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!”

⁹ Then those who heard it, ^(A)being^[a] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
