²² Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from your own people a prophet like me. You must listen to whatever he tells you.^(A)

A New Prophet Like Moses

¹⁵ “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet.^{[a](A) 16} This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’^{(B) 17} Then the Lord replied to me, ‘They are right in what they have said.^{(C) 18} I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet,^[b] who shall speak to them everything that I command.^{(D) 19} Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet^[c] shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.^(E)

³⁷ This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up a prophet for you from your own people as he raised me up.’^(A)

⁴ But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,^(A)

³⁰ Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. ³¹ They appeared in glory and were speaking about his exodus, which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.^{(A) 32} Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep, but as they awoke they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.^{(B) 33} Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us set up three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not realizing what he was saying.^{(C) 34} While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. ³⁵ Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen;^[a] listen to him!”^(D)

⁴ And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. ⁵ Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us set up three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”^{(A) 6} He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. ⁷ Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved;^[a] listen to him!”^(B)

Introduction and Salutation

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place, and he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,^(A)

⁹ and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,^(A)

⁹ but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower^[a] than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God^[b] he might taste death for everyone.^(A)

¹⁰ It was fitting that God,^[c] for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.^{(B) 11} For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father.^[d] For this reason Jesus^[e] is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,^{(C) 12} saying,

¹⁴ Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,^{(F) 15} and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death.^{(G) 16} For it is clear that he did not come to help angels but the descendants of Abraham. ¹⁷ Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people.^(H)
