²³And ^(A)about that time there arose a great commotion about ^(B)the Way. ²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of ^[a]Diana, brought ^(C)no small profit to the craftsmen. ²⁵He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade. ²⁶Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that ^(D)they are not gods which are made with hands. ²⁷So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and ^[b]her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”

²⁸Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!” ²⁹So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theater with one accord, having seized ^(E)Gaius and ^(F)Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions. ³⁰And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him. ³¹Then some of the ^[c]officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater. ³²Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together. ³³And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And ^(G)Alexander ^(H)motioned with his hand, and wanted to make his defense to the people. ³⁴But when they found out that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

³⁵And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess ^[d]Diana, and of the image which fell down from ^[e]Zeus? ³⁶Therefore, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rashly. ³⁷For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of ^[f]your goddess. ³⁸Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a ^[g]case against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. ³⁹But if you have any other inquiry to make, it shall be determined in the lawful assembly. ⁴⁰For we are in danger of being ^[h]called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering.” ⁴¹And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

²⁴δημητριος γαρ τις ονοματι αργυροκοπος ποιων ναους αργυρους αρτεμιδος παρειχετο τοις τεχνιταις εργασιαν ουκ ολιγην

²⁵ους συναθροισας και τους περι τα τοιαυτα εργατας ειπεν ανδρες επιστασθε οτι εκ ταυτης της εργασιας η ευπορια ημων εστιν

²⁶και θεωρειτε και ακουετε οτι ου μονον εφεσου αλλα σχεδον πασης της ασιας ο παυλος ουτος πεισας μετεστησεν ικανον οχλον λεγων οτι ουκ εισιν θεοι οι δια χειρων γινομενοι

²⁸ακουσαντες δε και γενομενοι πληρεις θυμου εκραζον λεγοντες μεγαλη η αρτεμις εφεσιων

²⁹και επλησθη η πολις ολη συγχυσεως ωρμησαν τε ομοθυμαδον εις το θεατρον συναρπασαντες γαιον και αρισταρχον μακεδονας συνεκδημους του παυλου

³⁰του δε παυλου βουλομενου εισελθειν εις τον δημον ουκ ειων αυτον οι μαθηται

³¹τινες δε και των ασιαρχων οντες αυτω φιλοι πεμψαντες προς αυτον παρεκαλουν μη δουναι εαυτον εις το θεατρον

³²αλλοι μεν ουν αλλο τι εκραζον ην γαρ η εκκλησια συγκεχυμενη και οι πλειους ουκ ηδεισαν τινος ενεκεν συνεληλυθεισαν

³³εκ δε του οχλου προεβιβασαν αλεξανδρον προβαλλοντων αυτον των ιουδαιων ο δε αλεξανδρος κατασεισας την χειρα ηθελεν απολογεισθαι τω δημω

³⁴επιγνοντων δε οτι ιουδαιος εστιν φωνη εγενετο μια εκ παντων ως επι ωρας δυο κραζοντων μεγαλη η αρτεμις εφεσιων

³⁵καταστειλας δε ο γραμματευς τον οχλον φησιν ανδρες εφεσιοι τις γαρ εστιν ανθρωπος ος ου γινωσκει την εφεσιων πολιν νεωκορον ουσαν της μεγαλης θεας αρτεμιδος και του διοπετους

³⁶αναντιρρητων ουν οντων τουτων δεον εστιν υμας κατεσταλμενους υπαρχειν και μηδεν προπετες πραττειν

³⁷ηγαγετε γαρ τους ανδρας τουτους ουτε ιεροσυλους ουτε βλασφημουντας την θεαν υμων

³⁸ει μεν ουν δημητριος και οι συν αυτω τεχνιται προς τινα λογον εχουσιν αγοραιοι αγονται και ανθυπατοι εισιν εγκαλειτωσαν αλληλοις

³⁹ει δε τι περι ετερων επιζητειτε εν τη εννομω εκκλησια επιλυθησεται

⁴⁰και γαρ κινδυνευομεν εγκαλεισθαι στασεως περι της σημερον μηδενος αιτιου υπαρχοντος περι ου δυνησομεθα αποδουναι λογον της συστροφης ταυτης

²³And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

²⁴for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

²⁵whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

²⁶and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

²⁷and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

²⁸And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

²⁹and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

³⁰And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

³¹and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

³²Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

³³and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

³⁴and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

³⁵And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

³⁶these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

³⁷`For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

³⁸if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

³⁹`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

⁴⁰for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

⁴¹and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.

²³About that time ^[a]a major disturbance occurred in regard to ^[b]^(A)the Way. ²⁴For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of ^[c]Artemis, ^(B)was bringing ^[d]considerable ^[e]business to the craftsmen; ²⁵he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity ^[f]depends upon this business. ²⁶You see and hear that not only in ^(C)Ephesus, but in almost all of ^[g]^(D)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that ^[h]^(E)gods made by hands are not gods at all. ²⁷Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess ^[i]Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of ^[j]^(F)Asia and ^(G)the ^[k]world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”

²⁸When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying, “Great is ^[l]Artemis of the ^(H)Ephesians!” ²⁹The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging along ^(I)Gaius and ^(J)Aristarchus, Paul’s ^(K)Macedonian traveling ^(L)companions. ³⁰And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, ^(M)the disciples would not let him. ³¹Also some of the ^[m]Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him and repeatedly urged him not to ^[n]venture into the theater. ³²^(N)So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the ^[o]assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know ^[p]for what reason they had come together. ³³Some of the crowd ^[q]concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having ^(O)motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly. ³⁴But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is ^[r]Artemis of the Ephesians!”

³⁵After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, “Men of ^(P)Ephesus, what person is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great ^[s]Artemis and of the image which fell down from ^[t]the sky? ³⁶So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash. ³⁷For you have brought these men here who are neither ^(Q)temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess. ³⁸So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and ^[u]^(R)proconsuls are available; have them bring charges against one another. ³⁹But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the ^[v]lawful ^[w]assembly. ⁴⁰For indeed, we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s events, since there is no real reason for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering.” ⁴¹After saying this he dismissed the ^[x]assembly.
