The Death of Herod

²⁰ Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and ^(A)having persuaded Blastus, the king's chamberlain,^[a] they asked for peace, because ^(B)their country depended on the king's country for food.

⁷ So they gave money to the masons and the carpenters, ^(A)and food, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians ^(B)to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, ^(C)according to the grant that they had from Cyrus king of Persia.

^21 (A)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^(B)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ^22 (C)But I tell you, it will be more bearable on ^(D)the day of judgment for ^(E)Tyre and Sidon than for you.

¹⁷ Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise ^(A)wheat of ^(B)Minnith, meal,^[a] honey, oil, and ^(C)balm.

An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

23 The ^(A)oracle concerning ^(B)Tyre.

⁸ The master commended the dishonest manager for his ^(A)shrewdness. For ^(B)the sons of this world^[a] are ^(C)more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than ^(D)the sons of light.

³¹ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not ^(A)sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

¹⁶ how did you fare? ^(A)When^[a] one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. ^17 (B)I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, ^(C)yet you did not turn to me, declares the Lord.

⁸ Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that ^(A)I may take pleasure in it and that ^(B)I may be glorified, says the Lord. ^9 (C)You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, ^(D)I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house ^(E)that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. ¹⁰ Therefore ^(F)the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. ¹¹ And ^(G)I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on ^(H)the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and ^(I)on all their labors.”
