Saul’s Conversion(A)
9 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples.(B) He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus,(C) so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way,(D) whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.(E) 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice(F) say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”(G)
7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound(H) but did not see anyone.(I) 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing.(J) So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision,(K) “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus(L) named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on(M) him to restore his sight.”
13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people(N) in Jerusalem.(O) 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests(P) to arrest all who call on your name.”(Q)
15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument(R) to proclaim my name to the Gentiles(S) and their kings(T) and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”(U)
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on(V) Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”(W) 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,(X) 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul in Damascus and Jerusalem
Saul spent several days with the disciples(Y) in Damascus.(Z) 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues(AA) that Jesus is the Son of God.(AB) 21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name?(AC) And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”(AD) 22 Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.(AE)
23 After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy among the Jews to kill him,(AF) 24 but Saul learned of their plan.(AG) Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25 But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.(AH)
26 When he came to Jerusalem,(AI) he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas(AJ) took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him,(AK) and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.(AL) 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews,[a](AM) but they tried to kill him.(AN) 30 When the believers(AO) learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea(AP) and sent him off to Tarsus.(AQ)
31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria(AR) enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.(AS)
Aeneas and Dorcas
32 As Peter traveled about the country, he went to visit the Lord’s people(AT) who lived in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who was paralyzed and had been bedridden for eight years. 34 “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you.(AU) Get up and roll up your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up. 35 All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon(AV) saw him and turned to the Lord.(AW)
36 In Joppa(AX) there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good(AY) and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.(AZ) 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples(BA) heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”
39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows(BB) stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
40 Peter sent them all out of the room;(BC) then he got down on his knees(BD) and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.”(BE) She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.(BF) 43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.(BG)

11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.
20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
23 And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24 But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
25 Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.
29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
30 Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.
31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
32 And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.
33 And there he found a certain man named Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.
34 And Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.
35 And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord.
36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
37 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
41 And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
42 And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.
43 And it came to pass, that he tarried many days in Joppa with one Simon a tanner.

The Damascus Road: Saul Converted(A)

Ananias Baptizes Saul

And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”

Saul Preaches Christ

21 Then all who heard were amazed, and said, (U)“Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?”
22 But Saul increased all the more in strength, (V)and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ.
Saul Escapes Death
23 Now after many days were past, (W)the Jews plotted to kill him. 24 (X)But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him. 25 Then the disciples took him by night and (Y)let him down through the wall in a large basket.
Saul at Jerusalem
26 And (Z)when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 (AA)But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. The Church Prospers

Aeneas Healed
32 Now it came to pass, as Peter went (AK)through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda. 33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, (AL)Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed.” Then he arose immediately. 35 So all who dwelt at Lydda and (AM)Sharon saw him and (AN)turned to the Lord.
Dorcas Restored to Life
36 At Joppa there was a certain disciple named [i]Tabitha, which is translated [j]Dorcas. This woman was full (AO)of good works and charitable deeds which she did. 37 But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in (AP)an upper room. 38 And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. 39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 But Peter (AQ)put them all out, and (AR)knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he (AS)said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. 41 Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. 42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, (AT)and many believed on the Lord. 43 So it was that he stayed many days in Joppa with (AU)Simon, a tanner.

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison
12 It was about this time that King Herod(A) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John,(B) put to death with the sword.(C) 3 When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(D) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(E) 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(F)
5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(G)
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(H) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel(I) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(J)
8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(K) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(L) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 Then Peter came to himself(M) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(N) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(O) where many people had gathered and were praying.(P) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(Q) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(R) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(S)
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(T) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(U) and the other brothers and sisters(V) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(W)
Herod’s Death
Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(X) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(Y) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(Z)
21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(AA) of the Lord struck him down,(AB) and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 But the word of God(AC) continued to spread and flourish.(AD)
Barnabas and Saul Sent Off
25 When Barnabas(AE) and Saul had finished their mission,(AF) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(AG) 13 1 Now in the church at Antioch(AH) there were prophets(AI) and teachers:(AJ) Barnabas,(AK) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(AL) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(AM) the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(AN) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(AO) to which I have called them.”(AP) 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(AQ) and sent them off.(AR)
On Cyprus
4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(AS) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(AT) 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(AU) in the Jewish synagogues.(AV) John(AW) was with them as their helper.
6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(AX) and false prophet(AY) named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul,(AZ) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer(BA) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(BB) from the faith.(BC) 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(BD) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(BE) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(BF) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(BG) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(BH)
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(BI) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
In Pisidian Antioch
13 From Paphos,(BJ) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(BK) where John(BL) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(BM) On the Sabbath(BN) they entered the synagogue(BO) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(BP) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”
16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(BQ) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(BR) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[b](BS) in the wilderness;(BT) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(BU) giving their land to his people(BV) as their inheritance.(BW) 20 All this took about 450 years.
“After this, God gave them judges(BX) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(BY) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(BZ) and he gave them Saul(CA) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(CB) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(CC) he made David their king.(CD) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(CE) he will do everything I want him to do.’(CF)
23 “From this man’s descendants(CG) God has brought to Israel the Savior(CH) Jesus,(CI) as he promised.(CJ) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(CK) 25 As John was completing his work,(CL) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(CM) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(CN)
26 “Fellow children of Abraham(CO) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(CP) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(CQ) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(CR) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(CS) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(CT) they took him down from the cross(CU) and laid him in a tomb.(CV) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(CW) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(CX) They are now his witnesses(CY) to our people.
32 “We tell you the good news:(CZ) What God promised our ancestors(DA) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(DB) As it is written in the second Psalm:
34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,
35 So it is also stated elsewhere:
36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(DF) he was buried with his ancestors(DG) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(DH) did not see decay.
38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(DI) 39 Through him everyone who believes(DJ) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(DK) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.’[f]”(DL)
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(DM) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(DN)
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(DO) and heaped abuse(DP) on him.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(DQ) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(DR) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
“‘I have made you[g] a light for the Gentiles,(DS)
that you[h] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[i]”(DT)
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(DU) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49 The word of the Lord(DV) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(DW) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(DX) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(DY) 52 And the disciples(DZ) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(EA)
In Iconium
14 At Iconium(EB) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(EC) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(ED) of Jews and Greeks believed. 2 But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(EE) 3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(EF) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(EG) 4 The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(EH) 5 There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(EI) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(EJ) 6 But they found out about it and fled(EK) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, 7 where they continued to preach(EL) the gospel.(EM)
In Lystra and Derbe
8 In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(EN) and had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(EO) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(EP) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(EQ)
11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(ER) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(ES) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(ET) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(EU) like you. We are bringing you good news,(EV) telling you to turn from these worthless things(EW) to the living God,(EX) who made the heavens and the earth(EY) and the sea and everything in them.(EZ) 16 In the past, he let(FA) all nations go their own way.(FB) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(FC) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(FD) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(FE) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
19 Then some Jews(FF) came from Antioch and Iconium(FG) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(FH) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(FI) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21 They preached the gospel(FJ) in that city and won a large number(FK) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(FL) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(FM) “We must go through many hardships(FN) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[j](FO) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(FP) committed them to the Lord,(FQ) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(FR) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(FS) where they had been committed to the grace of God(FT) for the work they had now completed.(FU) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(FV) and how he had opened a door(FW) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.(FX)

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

42 [v]So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, (CA)persuaded them to continue in (CB)the grace of God.
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they (CC)opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, (CD)“It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but (CE)since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, (CF)we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:
(CG)‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. (CH)And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
49 And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, (CI)raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 (CJ)But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples (CK)were filled with joy and (CL)with the Holy Spirit.
At Iconium
14 Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the (CM)Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and [w]poisoned their [x]minds against the brethren. 3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, (CN)who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and (CO)wonders to be done by their hands.
4 But the multitude of the city was (CP)divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the (CQ)apostles. 5 And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, (CR)to abuse and stone them, 6 they became aware of it and (CS)fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. 7 And they were preaching the gospel there.
Idolatry at Lystra
8 (CT)And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9 This man heard Paul speaking. [y]Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10 said with a loud voice, (CU)“Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, (CV)“The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 And Barnabas they called [z]Zeus, and Paul, [aa]Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, (CW)intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, (CX)they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15 and saying, “Men, (CY)why are you doing these things? (CZ)We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from (DA)these useless things (DB)to the living God, (DC)who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, 16 (DD)who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 (DE)Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, (DF)gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with (DG)food and gladness.” 18 And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.
Stoning, Escape to Derbe
19 (DH)Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, (DI)they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be (DJ)dead. 20 However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
Strengthening the Converts
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city (DK)and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, (DL)exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, (DM)“We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.” 23 So when they had (DN)appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. 24 And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. 25 Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.
27 Now when they had come and gathered the church together, (DO)they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had (DP)opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
