Acts 5:24-29

²⁴Now when ^(A)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what ^[a]would come of this. ²⁵But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!” ²⁶Then ^(B)the captain went along with ^(C)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for ^(D)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

²⁷When they had brought them, they had them stand ^[b]before ^(E)the Council. The high priest interrogated them, ²⁸saying, “We gave you ^(F)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and ^[c]yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and ^(G)intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.” ²⁹But Peter and the apostles answered, “^(H)We must obey God rather than men.

²⁴On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests^(A) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

²⁵Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” ²⁶At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people^(B) would stone them.

²⁷The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin^(C) to be questioned by the high priest. ²⁸“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”^(D) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”^(E)

²⁹Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!^(F)
