2 Kings 14:8-14

8 Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, and challenged him: “Come, let’s meet face to face.”(A)

9 King Jehoash of Israel sent word to King Amaziah of Judah, saying, “The thistle in Lebanon once sent a message to the cedar(B) in Lebanon,(C) saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ Then a wild animal in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom, and you have become overconfident.[a](D) Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why should you stir up such trouble that you fall—you and Judah with you?”

11 But Amaziah would not listen, so King Jehoash of Israel advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to face at Beth-shemesh(E) that belonged to Judah. 12 Judah was routed before Israel, and each man fled to his own tent.(F) 13 King Jehoash of Israel captured Judah’s King Amaziah son of Joash,[b] son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down two hundred yards[c] of Jerusalem’s wall from the Ephraim Gate(G) to the Corner Gate.(H) 14 He took all the gold and silver, all the articles found in the Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the king’s palace, and some hostages.(I) Then he returned to Samaria.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel. He said, “Come, let’s meet face to face.”[a] 9 King Jehoash of Israel sent this message back to King Amaziah of Judah, “A thornbush in Lebanon sent this message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ Then a wild animal[b] of Lebanon came by and trampled down the thorn.[c] 10 You thoroughly defeated Edom,[d] and it has gone to your head![e] Gloat over your success,[f] but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? Why bring down yourself and Judah along with you?”[g] 11 But Amaziah would not heed the warning,[h] so King Jehoash of Israel attacked.[i] He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to face[j] in Beth Shemesh of Judah. 12 Judah was defeated by Israel, and each man ran back home.[k] 13 King Jehoash of Israel captured King Amaziah of Judah, son of Jehoash son of Ahaziah, in Beth Shemesh. He[l] attacked[m] Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate—a distance of about 600 feet.[n] 14 He took away all the gold and silver, all the items found in the Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the royal palace, and some hostages.[o] Then he went back to Samaria.

In reality he is not capable of withstanding an attack by a real military power such as Israel (symbolized by the wild animal).

  14. 2 Kings 14:13 tn Heb “400 cubits.” The standard cubit in the OT is assumed by most authorities to be about 18 inches (45 cm) long.
