¹⁵ So ^(A)the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died.

²⁴ Joab the son of Zeruiah began a census, but he did not finish, for ^(A)wrath came upon Israel because of this census; nor was the number recorded in the account of the chronicles of King David.

^8 (A)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And ^[a]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, ^(B)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, ^(C)and by the beasts of the earth.

⁷ For ^(A)nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be ^(B)famines, ^[a]pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death^(A)

³⁶ Then the ^(B)angel^[a] of the Lord went out, and ^[b]killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead.

⁴ Over the division of the second month was ^[a]Dodai an Ahohite, and of his division Mikloth also was the leader; in his division were twenty-four thousand.

² So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, ^(A)from Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that ^(B)I may know the number of the people.”

¹⁹ Then ^(A)He struck the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. ^[a]He ^(B)struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, and the people lamented because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.
