¹² “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”

⁷ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.^(C) For what children are not disciplined by their father? ⁸ If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline^(D)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. ⁹ Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits^(E) and live!^{(F) 10} They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.^(G)

¹¹ So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice:

¹⁴ But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for^[a] the Lord,^(A) the son born to you will die.”

⁹ Why did you despise^(A) the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down^(B) Uriah^(C) the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed^(D) him with the sword of the Ammonites. ¹⁰ Now, therefore, the sword^(E) will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

⁴³ For the land will be deserted^(A) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected^(B) my laws and abhorred my decrees.^(C)
