¹⁶ So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured^(A) it out before the Lord.

¹⁴ Jacob set up a stone pillar^(A) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering^(B) on it; he also poured oil on it.^(C)

¹⁷ But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering^(A) on the sacrifice^(B) and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.^(C)

¹⁴ For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.^(A)

⁷ Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.

²⁴ However, I consider my life worth nothing to me;^(A) my only aim is to finish the race^(B) and complete the task^(C) the Lord Jesus has given me^(D)—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.^(E)

⁹ Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai^(A) the Ahohite.^(B) As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim^[a] for battle. Then the Israelites retreated,

⁵ He took his life^(A) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory^(B) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent^(C) man like David by killing him for no reason?”
