¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the ^[a]hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may ^(A)be struck down and die.”

^9 (A)Why have you ^(B)despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? ^(C)You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon.

¹⁷ Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

²⁵ Then Saul said, “Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any ^(A)dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take ^(B)vengeance on the king’s enemies.’ ” But Saul ^(C)thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

²¹ So Saul said, “I will give her to him, that she may ^[a]be a snare to him, and that ^(A)the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, ^(B)“You shall be my son-in-law today.”

¹⁷ Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; ^(A)I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight ^(B)the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, ^(C)“Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
