⁴ Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, ^(A)at their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁴ so shall the ^(A)king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians as prisoners and the Ethiopians as captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, ^(B)with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

⁵ that certain men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men ^(A)with their beards shaved and their clothes torn, having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to ^(B)the house of the Lord.

³ And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, ^[a]“Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

⁴ Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments ^[b]in the middle, at their ^(A)buttocks, and sent them away.

²⁷ You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard.
