¹⁰ And he defiled ^(A)Topheth, which is ^(B)in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, ^(C)that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to ^(D)Molech.^[a]

Ahaz Reigns in Judah

28 ^(A)Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done, ² but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made ^(B)metal images for ^(C)the Baals, ³ and ^(D)he made offerings in the ^(E)Valley of the Son of Hinnom and ^(F)burned his sons as an offering,^[a] according to ^(G)the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. ⁴ And he sacrificed and ^(H)made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.

Manasseh Reigns in Judah

33 ^(A)Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. ² And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to ^(B)the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. ³ For he rebuilt the high places ^(C)that his father Hezekiah had broken down, and he erected altars to the Baals, and made ^(D)Asheroth, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. ⁴ And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, ^(E)“In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.” ⁵ And he built altars for all the host of heaven in ^(F)the two courts of the house of the Lord. ^6 (G)And he burned his sons as an offering ^(H)in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and ^(I)used fortune-telling and omens and sorcery, and dealt with ^(J)mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. ⁷ And ^(K)the carved image of the idol that he had made he set in the house of God, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, ^(L)I will put my name forever,

The Valley of Slaughter

³⁰ “For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set ^(A)their detestable things in the house ^(B)that is called by my name, to ^(C)defile it. ³¹ And they have built the high places of ^(D)Topheth, which is in ^(E)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, ^(F)to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, ^(G)which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. ^32 (H)Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called ^(I)Topheth, or ^(J)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; ^(K)for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. ^33 (L)And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth, ^(M)and none will frighten them away. ^34 (N)And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, ^(O)for the land shall become a waste.

^15 (A)“But you trusted in your beauty ^(B)and played the whore^[a] because of your renown ^(C)and lavished your whorings^[b] on any passerby; your beauty^[c] became his. ¹⁶ You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful shrines, and on them played the whore. The like has never been, nor ever shall be.^{[d] 17} You also took ^(D)your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and ^(E)made for yourself images of men, and with them played the whore. ¹⁸ And you took your embroidered garments to cover them, ^(F)and set my oil and my incense before them. ^19 (G)Also my bread that I gave you—^(H)I fed you with fine flour and oil and honey—you set before them for ^(I)a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord God. ^20 (J)And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and ^(K)these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your whorings so small a matter ²¹ that you slaughtered my children and delivered them up as an offering by fire to them? ²² And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember ^(L)the days of your youth, ^(M)when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.

³⁶ The Lord said to me: ^(A)“Son of man, ^(B)will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Declare to them their abominations. ³⁷ For ^(C)they have committed adultery, ^(D)and blood is on their hands. With their idols they have committed adultery, and they have even ^(E)offered up^[a] to them for food the children whom they had borne to me. ³⁸ Moreover, this they have done to me: ^(F)they have defiled my sanctuary on the same day and ^(G)profaned my Sabbaths. ³⁹ For when ^(H)they had slaughtered their children in sacrifice to their idols, on the same day ^(I)they came into my sanctuary to profane it. And behold, ^(J)this is what they did in my house.
