Israel’s King Jehoahaz

13 In the twenty-third year of Judah’s King Joash(A) son of Ahaziah, Jehoahaz(B) son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight and followed the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.(C) So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel,(D) and he handed them over to King Hazael(E) of Aram and to his son Ben-hadad(F) during their reigns.

Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord heard him, for he saw the oppression the king of Aram inflicted on Israel.(G) Therefore, the Lord gave Israel a deliverer,(H) and they escaped from the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel returned to their former way of life,[a] but they didn’t turn away from the sins that the house of Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. Jehoahaz continued them,(I) and the Asherah pole also remained standing in Samaria. Jehoahaz did not have an army left, except for fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, because the king of Aram had destroyed them,(J) making them like dust at threshing.(K)

The rest of the events of Jehoahaz’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and his might, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings.(L) Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors, and he was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoash[b] became king in his place.

Israel’s King Jehoash

10 In the thirty-seventh year of Judah’s King Joash, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. 11 He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He did not turn away from all the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit, but he continued them.(M)

12 The rest of the events of Jehoash’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and the power he had to wage war against Judah’s King Amaziah,(N) are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. 13 Jehoash rested with his ancestors, and Jeroboam(O) sat on his throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

Elisha’s Death

14 When Elisha became sick with the illness from which he died, King Jehoash of Israel went down and wept over him and said, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!” (P)

15 Elisha responded, “Get a bow and arrows.” So he got a bow and arrows.(Q) 16 Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Grasp the bow.” So the king grasped it, and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. 17 Elisha said, “Open the east window.” So he opened it. Elisha said, “Shoot!” So he shot.(R) Then Elisha said, “The Lord’s arrow of victory, yes, the arrow of victory over Aram. You are to strike down the Arameans in Aphek(S) until you have put an end to them.”

18 Then Elisha said, “Take the arrows!” So he took them. Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground!” So he struck the ground three times and stopped. 19 The man of God(T) was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down Aram until you had put an end to them, but now you will strike down Aram only three times.” 20 Then Elisha died and was buried.(U)

Now Moabite raiders(V) used to come into the land in the spring of the year. 21 Once, as the Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a raiding party, so they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. When he touched Elisha’s bones, the man revived and stood up!(W)

God’s Mercy on Israel

22 King Hazael(X) of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz, 23 but the Lord was gracious to them, had compassion on them,(Y) and turned toward them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(Z) He was not willing to destroy them. Even now he has not banished them from his presence.(AA)

24 King Hazael of Aram died, and his son Ben-hadad(AB) became king in his place. 25 Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took back from Ben-hadad son of Hazael the cities that Hazael had taken in war from Jehoash’s father Jehoahaz. Jehoash defeated Ben-hadad three times and recovered the cities of Israel.(AC)

Difficult Times Ahead

But know this: Hard times will come in the last days.(A) For people will be lovers of self,(B) lovers of money,(C) boastful, proud,(D) demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,(E) unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers,(F) without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good,(G) traitors,(H) reckless,(I) conceited,(J) lovers of pleasure(K) rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power.(L) Avoid these people.(M)

For among them are those who worm their way into households and deceive gullible women overwhelmed by sins and led astray by a variety of passions,(N) always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.(O) Just as Jannes and Jambres(P) resisted Moses,(Q) so these also resist the truth. They are men who are corrupt in mind(R) and worthless(S) in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress, for their foolishness will be clear to all, as was the foolishness of Jannes and Jambres.

Struggles in the Christian Life

10 But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose,(T) faith, patience, love,(U) and endurance, 11 along with the persecutions and sufferings(V) that came to me in Antioch,(W) Iconium,(X) and Lystra.(Y) What persecutions I endured—and yet the Lord rescued me from them all. 12 In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.(Z) 13 Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving(AA) and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you,(AB) 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures,(AC) which are able to give you wisdom for salvation(AD) through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God[a](AE) and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.(AF)

  1. 3:16 Lit breathed out by God

Hear this, priests!(A)
Pay attention, house of Israel!
Listen, royal house!
For the judgment applies to you
because you have been a snare at Mizpah(B)
and a net spread out on Tabor.
Rebels(C) are deeply involved in slaughter;(D)
I will be a punishment for all of them.[a]
I know Ephraim,(E)
and Israel is not hidden from me.
For now, Ephraim,(F)
you have acted promiscuously;
Israel is defiled.
Their actions do not allow them
to return to their God,(G)
for a spirit of promiscuity is among them,(H)
and they do not know the Lord.(I)
Israel’s arrogance testifies against them.[b](J)
Both Israel and Ephraim stumble
because of their iniquity;(K)
even Judah will stumble with them.(L)
They go with their flocks and herds
to seek the Lord(M)
but do not find him;(N)
he has withdrawn from them.(O)
They betrayed the Lord;(P)
indeed, they gave birth to illegitimate children.(Q)
Now the New Moon(R) will devour them
along with their fields.(S)

Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah,(T)
the trumpet in Ramah;(U)
raise the war cry in Beth-aven:(V)
Look behind you,[c] Benjamin!(W)
Ephraim will become a desolation(X)
on the day of punishment;(Y)
I announce what is certain
among the tribes of Israel.(Z)
10 The princes of Judah are like those
who move boundary markers;(AA)
I will pour out my fury(AB) on them like water.(AC)
11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment,(AD)
for he is determined to follow what is worthless.[d]
12 So I am like rot to Ephraim(AE)
and like decay to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness
and Judah his wound,
Ephraim went to Assyria(AF)
and sent a delegation to the great king.[e](AG)
But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.(AH)
14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim(AI)
and like a young lion to the house of Judah.
Yes, I will tear them to pieces and depart.(AJ)
I will carry them off,
and no one can rescue them.(AK)
15 I will depart and return to my place
until they recognize their guilt and seek my face;(AL)
they will search for me in their distress.(AM)

A Call to Repentance

Come, let’s return to the Lord.(AN)
For he has torn us,(AO)
and he will heal us;(AP)
he has wounded us,
and he will bind up our wounds.(AQ)
He will revive us after two days,(AR)
and on the third day he will raise us up
so we can live in his presence.(AS)
Let’s strive to know the Lord.(AT)
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.(AU)
He will come to us like the rain,(AV)
like the spring showers that water the land.

The Lord’s First Lament

What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?(AW)
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist(AX)
and like the early dew that vanishes.
This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;[f](AY)
I have killed them with the words from my mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.[g]
For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God(AZ) rather than burnt offerings.(BA)

But they, like Adam,[h] have violated the covenant;(BB)
there they have betrayed me.(BC)

Gilead is a city of evildoers,(BD)
tracked with bloody footprints.(BE)
Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone,(BF)
a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem.(BG)
They commit atrocities.(BH)
10 I have seen something horrible(BI) in the house of Israel:
Ephraim’s promiscuity is there;(BJ) Israel is defiled.

11 A harvest is also appointed for you, Judah.(BK)
When I restore the fortunes of my people,(BL)
