Jezebel Killed

³⁰ Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup,^(A) arranged her hair and looked out of a window.

⁴⁰ “They even sent messengers for men who came from far away,^(A) and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, applied eye makeup^(B) and put on your jewelry.^(C)

¹⁷ Groan quietly;^(A) do not mourn for the dead. Keep your turban^(B) fastened and your sandals^(C) on your feet; do not cover your mustache and beard^(D) or eat the customary food of mourners.^(E)”

³ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.^(A)

⁹ I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,^{(A) 10} but with good deeds,^(B) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

¹⁸ In that day^(A) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,^{(B) 19} the earrings and bracelets^(C) and veils,^{(D) 20} the headdresses^(E) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, ²¹ the signet rings and nose rings,^{(F) 22} the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,^(G) the purses ²³ and mirrors, and the linen garments^(H) and tiaras^(I) and shawls.

Elijah Flees to Horeb

19 Now Ahab told Jezebel^(A) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed^(B) all the prophets with the sword. ² So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,^(C) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”^(D)
