Fall and Captivity of Judah

25 ^(A)And in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, ^(B)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came with all his army against Jerusalem and laid siege to it. ^(C)And they built siegeworks all around it.

And they built siegeworks all around it. ⁵ So the city was besieged till the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. ⁶ On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. ⁷ Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled and went out from the city by night by the way of a gate between the two walls, by the king's garden, and the Chaldeans were around the city. And they went in the direction of the Arabah. ⁸ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him. ¹⁰ The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at ^(B)Riblah. ^11 (C)He put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in chains, and the king of Babylon took him to Babylon, and put him in prison ^(D)till the day of his death.

¹⁰ and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, ^(A)my servant, ^(B)and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them.

Zedekiah to Die in Babylon

34 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when ^(A)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army ^(B)and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: ² “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to ^(C)Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: ^(D)Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. ^3 (E)You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. ^(F)You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’ ⁴ Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! ^(G)Thus says the Lord concerning you: ^(H)‘You shall not die by the sword. ⁵ You shall die in peace. ^(I)And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall ^(J)burn spices for you ^(K)and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.”

⁶ Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,

¹⁵ and ^(A)Jehozadak went into exile when the Lord sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile ^(B)by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

⁴³ For ^(A)the days will come upon you, when your enemies ^(B)will set up a barricade around you and ^(C)surround you and hem you in on every side ^44 (D)and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And ^(E)they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know ^(F)the time of your ^(G)visitation.”

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God

4 ^[a] King Nebuchadnezzar to all ^(A)peoples, nations, and languages, ^(B)that dwell in all the earth: ^(C)Peace be multiplied to you! ² It has seemed good to me to show the ^(D)signs and wonders that the ^(E)Most High God has done for me.

Nebuchadnezzar's Second Dream

^4 [b] I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. ⁵ I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and ^(J)the visions of my head alarmed me. ⁶ So ^(K)I made a decree that ^(L)all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. ⁷ Then ^(M)the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but ^(N)they could not make known to me its interpretation. ⁸ At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named ^(O)Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is ^(P)the spirit of the holy gods^[c]—and I told him the dream, saying, ⁹ “O Belteshazzar, ^(Q)chief of the magicians, because I know that ^(R)the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no ^(S)mystery is too difficult for you, tell me ^(T)the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation. ^10 (U)The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and ^(V)behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. ^11 (W)The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. ^12 (X)Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. ^(Y)The beasts of the field found shade under it, and ^(Z)the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

¹³ “I saw in ^(AA)the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, ^(AB)a watcher, ^(AC)a holy one, came down from heaven. ¹⁴ He ^(AD)proclaimed aloud and said thus: ^(AE)‘Chop down the tree and ^(AF)lop off its branches, ^(AG)strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. ^(AH)Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. ¹⁵ But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth. ¹⁶ Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him; ^(AI)and let seven periods of time ^(AJ)pass over him. ¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of ^(AK)the watchers, the decision by the word of ^(AL)the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High ^(AM)rules the kingdom of men ^(AN)and gives it to whom he will and ^(AO)sets over it the lowliest of men.’ ¹⁸ This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O ^(AP)Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because ^(AQ)all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for ^(AR)the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”

⁷ “For thus says the Lord God: ^(A)Behold, I will bring against Tyre ^(B)from the north Nebuchadnezzar^[a] king of Babylon, ^(C)king of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
