⁸ For even if I made you ^(A)sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; ^(B)though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while.

Israel’s Deliverance Assured^(A)

²² So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? ²³ For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all.”

^19 (A)As many as I love, I rebuke and ^(B)chasten.^[a] Therefore be ^[b]zealous and repent.

⁹ Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to ^(A)the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, ^(B)that we may be partakers of His holiness. ¹¹ Now no ^[a]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields ^(C)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

¹¹ For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what ^(A)clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be ^(B)clear in this matter.

⁶ Nevertheless ^(A)God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by ^(B)the coming of Titus,

² For if I make you ^(A)sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Forgive the Offender

³ And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, ^(B)I should have sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy, ^(C)having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. ⁴ For out of much ^[a]affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, ^(D)not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

⁵ But ^(E)if anyone has caused grief, he has not ^(F)grieved me, but all of you to some extent—not to be too severe. ⁶ This punishment which was inflicted ^(G)by the majority is sufficient for such a man, ^7 (H)so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. ⁸ Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. ⁹ For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are ^(I)obedient in all things. ¹⁰ Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For ^[b]if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, ¹¹ lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of ^[a]Jonah, do you ^[b]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, ^(A)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

⁶ But because I have said these things to you, ^(A)sorrow has filled your heart.
