⁵ Therefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram.^(A) The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus.

He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him.

The Sign of Immanuel

7 When Ahaz^(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin^(B) of Aram^(C) and Pekah^(D) son of Remaliah^(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

²⁴ Although the Aramean army had come with only a few men,^(A) the Lord delivered into their hands a much larger army.^(B) Because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, judgment was executed on Joash.

⁵ Then Rezin^(A) king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem and besieged Ahaz, but they could not overpower him. ⁶ At that time, Rezin^(B) king of Aram recovered Elath^(C) for Aram by driving out the people of Judah. Edomites then moved into Elath and have lived there to this day.

⁶ “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.”

¹⁷ He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians,^[a](A) who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and did not spare young men^(B) or young women, the elderly or the infirm.^(C) God gave them all into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar.^(D)

Jehoiakim King of Judah^(A)

⁵ Jehoiakim^(B) was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God.

¹¹ So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner,^(A) put a hook^(B) in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles^(C) and took him to Babylon.

¹⁴ In his anger^(A) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands^(B) of raiders who plundered^(C) them. He sold them^(D) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.^(E)
