¹⁰ And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You ^(A)would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but ^(B)they turned from them and did not destroy them—

¹⁹ And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to ^(A)the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ ”

⁴ And command the people, saying, ^(A)“You are about to pass through the territory of ^(B)your brethren, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully. ⁵ Do not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, ^(C)because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

⁹ Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given ^(A)Ar to ^(B)the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ ”

Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir Defeated

20 It happened after this that the people of ^(A)Moab with the people of ^(B)Ammon, and others with them besides the ^(C)Ammonites,^[a] came to battle against Jehoshaphat.

¹⁵ and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: ^(A)‘Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the people of Ammon; ¹⁶ for when Israel came up from Egypt, they walked through the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and ^(B)came to Kadesh. ¹⁷ Then ^(C)Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please let me pass through your land.” ^(D)But the king of Edom would not heed. And in like manner they sent to the ^(E)king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel ^(F)remained in Kadesh. ¹⁸ And they ^(G)went along through the wilderness and ^(H)bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab, came to the east side of the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁷ Please ^(A)let us pass through your country. We will not pass through fields or vineyards, nor will we drink water from wells; we will go along the King’s Highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.’ ”

¹⁸ Then ^(B)Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through my land, lest I come out against you with the sword.”

¹⁹ So the children of Israel said to him, “We will go by the Highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, ^(C)then I will pay for it; let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.”

²⁰ Then he said, ^(D)“You shall not pass through.” So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand. ²¹ Thus Edom ^(E)refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so Israel ^(F)turned away from him.

²² Now when they began to sing and to praise, ^(A)the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.
