Ish-bosheth Murdered

When Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, (A)his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed. Now Saul's son had two men who were captains of raiding bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon a man of Benjamin from Beeroth ((B)for Beeroth also is counted part of Benjamin; (C)the Beerothites fled (D)to Gittaim and have been sojourners there to this day).

(E)Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan (F)came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he was taking his noonday rest. And they came into the midst of the house as if to get wheat, and they stabbed him (G)in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.[a] When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of (H)the Arabah all night, and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, (I)who sought your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring.” But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, (J)“As the Lord lives, (K)who has redeemed my life out of every adversity, 10 (L)when one told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, (M)I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now (N)require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?” 12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it (O)in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.

David Anointed King of Israel

Then all the tribes of Israel (P)came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, (Q)we are your bone and flesh. In times past, when Saul was king over us, (R)it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, (S)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince[b] over Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, (T)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron (U)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and (V)he reigned forty years. (W)At Hebron he reigned over Judah (X)seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.[c]

(Y)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem (Z)against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, (AA)that is, the city of David. And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack ‘the lame and the blind,’ who are hated by David's soul.” Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” And David lived in the stronghold and called it (AB)the city of David. And David built the city all around from the (AC)Millo inward. 10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.

11 (AD)And (AE)Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house. 12 And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

13 And David took more (AF)concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 (AG)And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down (AH)to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in (AI)the Valley of Rephaim. 19 And David (AJ)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” (AK)Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.[d] 21 And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.

22 And the Philistines came up yet again (AL)and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 (AM)And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And (AN)when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, (AO)for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba (AP)to Gezer.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

(AQ)David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from (AR)Baale-judah (AS)to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts (AT)who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God (AU)on a new cart and brought it (AV)out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,[e] the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God,[f] and Ahio went before the ark.

Uzzah and the Ark

And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with (AW)songs[g] and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when they came to the threshing floor of (AX)Nacon, Uzzah (AY)put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and (AZ)God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah[h] to this day. And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside (BA)to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, (BB)and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

12 And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” (BC)So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom (BD)to the city of David with rejoicing. 13 And when (BE)those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, (BF)he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. 14 And David (BG)danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was (BH)wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

David and Michal

16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it (BI)in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. (BJ)And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, (BK)he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts 19 and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,[i] and a cake of raisins to each one. (BL)Then all the people departed, each to his house.

20 And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, (BM)uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the (BN)vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, (BO)who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[j] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your[k] eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

The Lord's Covenant with David

(BP)Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord (BQ)had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to (BR)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell (BS)in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells (BT)in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, (BU)“Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (BV)Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house (BW)since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about (BX)in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where (BY)I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with (BZ)any of the judges[l] of Israel, whom I commanded (CA)to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, (CB)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[m] over my people Israel. (CC)And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel (CD)and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place (CE)and be disturbed no more. (CF)And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 (CG)from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And (CH)I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that (CI)the Lord will make you a house. 12 (CJ)When your days are fulfilled and (CK)you lie down with your fathers, (CL)I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (CM)He shall build a house for my name, and (CN)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (CO)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, (CP)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 (CQ)but my steadfast love will not depart from him, (CR)as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 (CS)And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[n] (CT)Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer of Gratitude

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, (CU)“Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. (CV)You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? (CW)For you know your servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 22 (CX)Therefore you are great, O Lord God. (CY)For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 (CZ)And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name (DA)and doing for them[o] great and awesome things by driving out before your people,[p] whom (DB)you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 (DC)And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O Lord, became their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and (DD)your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, (DE)and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

David's Victories

(DF)After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took (DG)Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

(DH)And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites (DI)became servants to David and (DJ)brought tribute.

David also defeated (DK)Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (DL)Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates. (DM)And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David (DN)hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. (DO)And when the (DP)Syrians of Damascus came to help (DQ)Hadadezer king of (DR)Zobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians (DS)became servants to David and brought tribute. (DT)And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. And David took (DU)the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze.

When Toi king of (DV)Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hadadezer, 10 Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. 11 (DW)These also King David dedicated to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued, 12 from Edom, (DX)Moab, (DY)the Ammonites, (DZ)the Philistines, (EA)Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (EB)Zobah.

13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in (EC)the Valley of Salt. 14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, (ED)and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

David's Officials

15 So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people. 16 (EE)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and (EF)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder, 17 and (EG)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and (EH)Seraiah was secretary, 18 and (EI)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over[q] the (EJ)Cherethites and the Pelethites, and David's sons were priests.

Ish-Bosheth Murdered

When Ish-Bosheth son of Saul heard that Abner(A) had died in Hebron, he lost courage, and all Israel became alarmed. Now Saul’s son had two men who were leaders of raiding bands. One was named Baanah and the other Rekab; they were sons of Rimmon the Beerothite from the tribe of Benjamin—Beeroth(B) is considered part of Benjamin, because the people of Beeroth fled to Gittaim(C) and have resided there as foreigners to this day.

(Jonathan(D) son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news(E) about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became disabled.(F) His name was Mephibosheth.)(G)

Now Rekab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, set out for the house of Ish-Bosheth,(H) and they arrived there in the heat of the day while he was taking his noonday rest.(I) They went into the inner part of the house as if to get some wheat, and they stabbed(J) him in the stomach. Then Rekab and his brother Baanah slipped away.

They had gone into the house while he was lying on the bed in his bedroom. After they stabbed and killed him, they cut off his head. Taking it with them, they traveled all night by way of the Arabah.(K) They brought the head(L) of Ish-Bosheth to David at Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul,(M) your enemy, who tried to kill you. This day the Lord has avenged(N) my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”

David answered Rekab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered(O) me out of every trouble, 10 when someone told me, ‘Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag.(P) That was the reward I gave him for his news! 11 How much more—when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed—should I not now demand his blood(Q) from your hand and rid the earth of you!”

12 So David gave an order to his men, and they killed them.(R) They cut off their hands and feet and hung the bodies by the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-Bosheth and buried it in Abner’s tomb at Hebron.

David Becomes King Over Israel(S)

All the tribes of Israel(T) came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood.(U) In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns.(V) And the Lord said(W) to you, ‘You will shepherd(X) my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.(Y)’”

When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant(Z) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(AA) David king over Israel.

David was thirty years old(AB) when he became king, and he reigned(AC) forty(AD) years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,(AE) and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

David Conquers Jerusalem(AF)(AG)

The king and his men marched to Jerusalem(AH) to attack the Jebusites,(AI) who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion(AJ)—which is the City of David.(AK)

On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft(AL) to reach those ‘lame and blind’(AM) who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces[b](AN) inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful,(AO) because the Lord God Almighty(AP) was with him.(AQ)

11 Now Hiram(AR) king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom(AS) for the sake of his people Israel.

13 After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives(AT) in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of the children born to him there:(AU) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan,(AV) Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines(AW)

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.(AX) 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim;(AY) 19 so David inquired(AZ) of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[c](BA) 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.(BB)

22 Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 23 so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 24 As soon as you hear the sound(BC) of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front(BD) of you to strike the Philistine army.” 25 So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines(BE) all the way from Gibeon[d](BF) to Gezer.(BG)

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem(BH)(BI)

David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. He and all his men went to Baalah[e](BJ) in Judah to bring up from there the ark(BK) of God, which is called by the Name,[f](BL) the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned(BM) between the cherubim(BN) on the ark. They set the ark of God on a new cart(BO) and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.(BP) Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it,[g] and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and all Israel were celebrating(BQ) with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,[h] harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.(BR)

When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of(BS) the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act;(BT) therefore God struck him down,(BU) and he died there beside the ark of God.

Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath(BV) had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[i](BW)

David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How(BX) can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 He was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(BY) the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.(BZ)

12 Now King David(CA) was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed(CB) a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod,(CC) David was dancing(CD) before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts(CE) and the sound of trumpets.(CF)

16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David,(CG) Michal(CH) daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it,(CI) and David sacrificed burnt offerings(CJ) and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing(CK) the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(CL) the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(CM) to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women.(CN) And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked(CO) in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed(CP) me ruler(CQ) over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

God’s Promise to David(CR)

After the king was settled in his palace(CS) and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies(CT) around him,(CU) he said to Nathan(CV) the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house(CW) of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”(CX)

Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind,(CY) go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(CZ) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(DA) I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(DB) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(DC) as my dwelling.(DD) Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(DE) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(DF) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(DG) of cedar?(DH)”’

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(DI) and appointed you ruler(DJ) over my people Israel.(DK) I have been with you wherever you have gone,(DL) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(DM) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(DN) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(DO) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(DP) Wicked(DQ) people will not oppress them anymore,(DR) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[j](DS) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(DT)

“‘The Lord declares(DU) to you that the Lord himself will establish(DV) a house(DW) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(DX) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(DY) and I will establish his kingdom.(DZ) 13 He is the one who will build a house(EA) for my Name,(EB) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(EC) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(ED) When he does wrong, I will punish him(EE) with a rod(EF) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(EG) as I took it away from Saul,(EH) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[k]; your throne(EI) will be established(EJ) forever.(EK)’”

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer(EL)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I,(EM) Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree,(EN) Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human![l]

20 “What more can David say(EO) to you? For you know(EP) your servant,(EQ) Sovereign Lord. 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

22 “How great(ER) you are,(ES) Sovereign Lord! There is no one like(ET) you, and there is no God(EU) but you, as we have heard with our own ears.(EV) 23 And who is like your people Israel(EW)—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name(EX) for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders(EY) by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed(EZ) from Egypt?[m] 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own(FA) forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.(FB)

25 “And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise(FC) you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name(FD) will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established(FE) in your sight.

27 Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy,(FF) and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing(FG) the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”

David’s Victories(FH)

In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines(FI) and subdued(FJ) them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.

David also defeated the Moabites.(FK) He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.(FL)

Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer(FM) son of Rehob, king of Zobah,(FN) when he went to restore his monument at[n] the Euphrates(FO) River. David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers[o] and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung(FP) all but a hundred of the chariot horses.

When the Arameans of Damascus(FQ) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. He put garrisons(FR) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(FS) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(FT)

David took the gold shields(FU) that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. From Tebah[p] and Berothai,(FV) towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.

When Tou[q] king of Hamath(FW) heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,(FX) 10 he sent his son Joram[r] to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze.

11 King David dedicated(FY) these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12 Edom[s](FZ) and Moab,(GA) the Ammonites(GB) and the Philistines,(GC) and Amalek.(GD) He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David became famous(GE) after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites[t] in the Valley of Salt.(GF)

14 He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites(GG) became subject to David.(GH) The Lord gave David victory(GI) wherever he went.(GJ)

David’s Officials(GK)

15 David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right(GL) for all his people. 16 Joab(GM) son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat(GN) son of Ahilud was recorder;(GO) 17 Zadok(GP) son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar(GQ) were priests; Seraiah was secretary;(GR) 18 Benaiah(GS) son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites(GT) and Pelethites; and David’s sons were priests.[u]
