Encouragement to Give Generously

We want you to know, brothers,[a] about the grace of God that has been (A)given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and (B)their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave (C)according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly (D)for the favor[b] of taking part in (E)the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they (F)gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, (G)we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you (H)this act of grace. But as (I)you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you[c](J)see that you excel in this act of grace also.

(K)I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that (L)though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter (M)I give my judgment: (N)this benefits you, who (O)a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable (P)according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply (Q)their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, (R)“Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

Commendation of Titus

16 But (S)thanks be to God, (T)who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. 17 For (U)he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going[d] to you of his own accord. 18 With him we are sending[e] (V)the brother who is famous among (W)all the churches for his preaching of the gospel. 19 And not only that, but he has been (X)appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of (Y)grace that is being ministered by us, (Z)for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will. 20 We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, 21 for (AA)we aim at what is honorable (AB)not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man. 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is (AC)my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers[f] of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24 So give proof before the churches of your love and of (AD)our boasting about you to these men.

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

Now (AE)it is superfluous for me to write to you about (AF)the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, (AG)of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready (AH)since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But (AI)I am sending[g] the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, (AJ)as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians (AK)come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the (AL)gift[h] you have promised, so that it may be ready (AM)as a willing gift, (AN)not as an exaction.[i]

The Cheerful Giver

The point is this: (AO)whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[j] will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, (AP)not reluctantly or under compulsion, for (AQ)God loves a cheerful giver. And (AR)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency[k] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

(AS)“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies (AT)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (AU)increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 (AV)You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which (AW)through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying (AX)the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, (AY)they[l] will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your (AZ)confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 (BA)Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Paul Defends His Ministry

10 (BB)I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the (BC)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— I beg of you (BD)that when I am present I may not have to show (BE)boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the (BF)weapons of (BG)our warfare are not of the flesh but have (BH)divine power (BI)to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and (BJ)every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to (BK)obey Christ, (BL)being ready to punish every disobedience, (BM)when your obedience is complete.

(BN)Look at what is before your eyes. (BO)If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as (BP)he is Christ's, (BQ)so also are we. For even if I boast a little too much of (BR)our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but (BS)his bodily presence is weak, and (BT)his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or (BU)compare ourselves with some of those who (BV)are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are (BW)without understanding.

13 But we will not boast (BX)beyond limits, but will (BY)boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, (BZ)to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. (CA)For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that (CB)as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be (CC)greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let (CD)the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is (CE)not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one (CF)whom the Lord commends.

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since (CG)I betrothed you to one husband, (CH)to present you (CI)as a pure virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that (CJ)as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts (CK)will be led astray from a (CL)sincere and (CM)pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and (CN)proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept (CO)a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. Indeed, I consider that (CP)I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. (CQ)Even if I am unskilled in speaking, (CR)I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way (CS)we have made this plain to you in all things.

Or (CT)did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because (CU)I preached God's gospel to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was (CV)in need, (CW)I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia (CX)supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain (CY)from burdening you in any way. 10 (CZ)As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine (DA)will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. 11 And why? (DB)Because I do not love you? (DC)God knows I do!

12 And what I am doing I will continue to do, (DD)in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are (DE)false apostles, (DF)deceitful workmen, (DG)disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as (DH)an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as (DI)servants of righteousness. (DJ)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Paul's Sufferings as an Apostle

16 I repeat, (DK)let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. 17 What I am saying (DL)with this boastful confidence, (DM)I say not as the Lord would[m] but as a fool. 18 Since (DN)many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. 19 For you gladly bear with fools, (DO)being wise yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone (DP)makes slaves of you, or (DQ)devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or (DR)strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, (DS)we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? (DT)So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they (DU)servants of Christ? (DV)I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, (DW)far more imprisonments, (DX)with countless beatings, and (DY)often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the (DZ)forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was (EA)beaten with rods. (EB)Once I was stoned. Three times I (EC)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, (ED)danger from my own people, (EE)danger from Gentiles, (EF)danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 (EG)in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, (EH)in hunger and thirst, often without food,[n] in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for (EI)all the churches. 29 (EJ)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

30 (EK)If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 (EL)The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, (EM)he who is blessed forever, (EN)knows that I am not lying. 32 At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas (EO)was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 (EP)but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands.

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(A) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(B) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(C) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(D) in this service(E) to the Lord’s people.(F) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(G) Titus,(H) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(I) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(J)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(K) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(L) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(M) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(N) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(O) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(P)

10 And here is my judgment(Q) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(R) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(S) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(T) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(U) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b](V)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(W) who put into the heart(X) of Titus(Y) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(Z) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(AA) who is praised by all the churches(AB) for his service to the gospel.(AC) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(AD) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(AE) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(AF)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(AG) he is my partner(AH) and co-worker(AI) among you; as for our brothers,(AJ) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(AK) so that the churches can see it.

There is no need(AL) for me to write to you about this service(AM) to the Lord’s people.(AN) For I know your eagerness to help,(AO) and I have been boasting(AP) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(AQ) you in Achaia(AR) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. But I am sending the brothers(AS) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(AT) For if any Macedonians(AU) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(AV) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(AW) not as one grudgingly given.(AX)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(AY) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(AZ) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(BA) for God loves a cheerful giver.(BB) And God is able(BC) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(BD) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(BE) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[c](BF)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(BG) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(BH) 11 You will be enriched(BI) in every way so that you can be generous(BJ) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(BK)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(BL) of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(BM) 13 Because of the service(BN) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(BO) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(BP) of the gospel of Christ,(BQ) and for your generosity(BR) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(BS) for his indescribable gift!(BT)

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry

10 By the humility and gentleness(BU) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(BV) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(BW) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(BX) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(BY) The weapons we fight with(BZ) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(CA) to demolish strongholds.(CB) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(CC) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(CD) to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(CE)

You are judging by appearances.[d](CF) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(CG) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(CH) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(CI) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(CJ) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(CK) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(CL) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(CM) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(CN) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(CO) with the gospel of Christ.(CP) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(CQ) by boasting of work done by others.(CR) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(CS) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(CT) in the regions beyond you.(CU) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[e](CV) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(CW) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(CX)

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(CY) me in a little foolishness.(CZ) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(DA) to Christ, so that I might present you(DB) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(DC) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(DD) or if you receive a different spirit(DE) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(DF) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(DG) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[f](DH) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(DI) but I do have knowledge.(DJ) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(DK) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(DL) to you free of charge?(DM) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(DN) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(DO) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(DP) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(DQ) nobody in the regions of Achaia(DR) will stop this boasting(DS) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(DT) I do!(DU)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(DV) deceitful(DW) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(DX) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(DY) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(DZ)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(EA) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(EB) but as a fool.(EC) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(ED) I too will boast.(EE) 19 You gladly put up with(EF) fools since you are so wise!(EG) 20 In fact, you even put up with(EH) anyone who enslaves you(EI) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(EJ) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(EK) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(EL) Are they Israelites? So am I.(EM) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(EN) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(EO) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(EP) been in prison more frequently,(EQ) been flogged more severely,(ER) and been exposed to death again and again.(ES) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(ET) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(EU) once I was pelted with stones,(EV) three times I was shipwrecked,(EW) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(EX) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(EY) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(EZ) 27 I have labored and toiled(FA) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(FB) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(FC) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(FD) Who is led into sin,(FE) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(FF) of the things that show my weakness.(FG) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(FH) knows(FI) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(FJ) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(FK)
