(A)who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in (B)Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.[a] (C)If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you (D)share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[b] of (E)the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us (F)rely not on ourselves (G)but on God (H)who raises the dead. 10 (I)He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. (J)On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 (K)You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf (L)for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

  1. 2 Corinthians 1:5 Or For as the sufferings of Christ abound for us, so also our comfort abounds through Christ

who comforts us(A) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(B) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(C) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(D) so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed,(E) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(F) in the province of Asia.(G) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(H) who raises the dead.(I) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(J) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(K) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(L) Then many will give thanks(M) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
