Samuel’s Address at Saul’s Coronation

12 Now Samuel said to all Israel: “Indeed I have ^[a]heeded ^(A)your voice in all that you said to me, and ^(B)have made a king over you. ² And now here is the king, ^(C)walking before you; ^(D)and I am old and grayheaded, and look, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my childhood to this day. ³ Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before ^(E)His anointed: ^(F)Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I received any ^(G)bribe with which to ^(H)blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”

⁴ And they said, ^(I)“You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man’s hand.”

⁵ Then he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, ^(J)that you have not found anything ^(K)in my hand.”

And they answered, “He is witness.”

⁶ Then Samuel said to the people, ^(L)“It is the Lord who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. ⁷ Now therefore, stand still, that I may ^(M)reason with you before the Lord concerning all the ^(N)righteous acts of the Lord which He did to you and your fathers: ^8 (O)When Jacob had gone into ^[b]Egypt, and your fathers ^(P)cried out to the Lord, then the Lord ^(Q)sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. ⁹ And when they ^(R)forgot the Lord their God, He sold them into the hand of ^(S)Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, into the hand of the ^(T)Philistines, and into the hand of the king of ^(U)Moab; and they fought against them. ¹⁰ Then they cried out to the Lord, and said, ^(V)‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord ^(W)and served the Baals and ^[c]Ashtoreths; but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ ¹¹ And the Lord sent ^[d]Jerubbaal, ^[e]Bedan, ^(X)Jephthah, and ^(Y)Samuel,^[f] and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. ¹² And when you saw that ^(Z)Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, ^(AA)you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when ^(AB)the Lord your God was your king.

¹³ “Now therefore, ^(AC)here is the king ^(AD)whom you have chosen and whom you have desired. And take note, ^(AE)the Lord has set a king over you. ¹⁴ If you ^(AF)fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the Lord your God. ¹⁵ However, if you do ^(AG)not obey the voice of the Lord, but ^(AH)rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

¹⁶ “Now therefore, ^(AI)stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: ¹⁷ Is today not the ^(AJ)wheat harvest? ^(AK)I will call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and ^(AL)rain, that you may perceive and see that ^(AM)your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking a king for yourselves.”

¹⁸ So Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and ^(AN)all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

¹⁹ And all the people said to Samuel, ^(AO)“Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.”

²⁰ Then Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; ^(AP)yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. ²¹ And ^(AQ)do not turn aside; ^(AR)for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. ²² For ^(AS)the Lord will not forsake ^(AT)His people, ^(AU)for His great name’s sake, because ^(AV)it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. ²³ Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord ^(AW)in ceasing to pray for you; but ^(AX)I will teach you the ^(AY)good and the right way. ^24 (AZ)Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for ^(BA)consider what ^(BB)great things He has done for you. ²⁵ But if you still do wickedly, ^(BC)you shall be swept away, ^(BD)both you and your king.”

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

13 Saul ^[g]reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, ² Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in ^(BE)Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with ^(BF)Jonathan in ^(BG)Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.

³ And Jonathan attacked ^(BH)the garrison of the Philistines that was in ^(BI)Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!” ⁴ Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become ^[h]an abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal.

⁵ Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, ^[i]thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people ^(BJ)as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of ^(BK)Beth Aven. ⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people ^(BL)hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. ⁷ And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the ^(BM)land of Gad and Gilead.

As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. ^8 (BN)Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. ⁹ So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering. ¹⁰ Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might ^[j]greet him.

¹¹ And Samuel said, “What have you done?”

Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, ¹² then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, ^(BO)“You have done foolishly. ^(BP)You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ^14 (BQ)But now your kingdom shall not continue. ^(BR)The Lord has sought for Himself a man ^(BS)after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have ^(BT)not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

¹⁵ Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of ^[k]Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people present with him, ^(BU)about six hundred men.

No Weapons for the Army

¹⁶ Saul, Jonathan his son, and the people present with them remained in ^[l]Gibeah of Benjamin. But the Philistines encamped in Michmash. ¹⁷ Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned onto the road to ^(BV)Ophrah, to the land of Shual, ¹⁸ another company turned to the road to ^(BW)Beth Horon, and another company turned to the road of the border that overlooks the Valley of ^(BX)Zeboim toward the wilderness.

¹⁹ Now ^(BY)there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.” ²⁰ But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man’s plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle; ²¹ and the charge for a sharpening was a ^[m]pim for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to set the points of the goads. ²² So it came about, on the day of battle, that ^(BZ)there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.

^23 (CA)And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.

Jesus’ Brothers Disbelieve

7 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, ^(A)because the ^[a]Jews sought to kill Him. ^2 (B)Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. ^3 (C)His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. ⁴ For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” ⁵ For ^(D)even His ^(E)brothers did not believe in Him.

⁶ Then Jesus said to them, ^(F)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. ^7 (G)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me ^(H)because I testify of it that its works are evil. ⁸ You go up to this feast. I am not ^[b]yet going up to this feast, ^(I)for My time has not yet fully come.” ⁹ When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

The Heavenly Scholar

¹⁰ But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. ¹¹ Then ^(J)the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” ¹² And ^(K)there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. ^(L)Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” ¹³ However, no one spoke openly of Him ^(M)for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and ^(N)taught. ^15 (O)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

^16 [c]Jesus answered them and said, ^(P)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. ^17 (Q)If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. ^18 (R)He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who ^(S)seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and ^(T)no unrighteousness is in Him. ^19 (U)Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? ^(V)Why do you seek to kill Me?”

²⁰ The people answered and said, ^(W)“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. ^22 (X)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, ^(Y)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. ²³ If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because ^(Z)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? ^24 (AA)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Could This Be the Christ?

²⁵ Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to ^(AB)kill? ²⁶ But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. ^(AC)Do the rulers know indeed that this is ^[d]truly the Christ? ^27 (AD)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

²⁸ Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, ^(AE)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and ^(AF)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me ^(AG)is true, ^(AH)whom you do not know. ^29 [e]But ^(AI)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

³⁰ Therefore ^(AJ)they sought to take Him; but ^(AK)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
