¹¹ The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.^(A)

³ among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s^(A) brother Ahitub^(B) son of Phinehas, the son of Eli,^(C) the Lord’s priest in Shiloh.^(D) No one was aware that Jonathan had left.

¹⁸ The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”^(A) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.^{(B) 19} He also put to the sword^(C) Nob,^(D) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.

²⁰ But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,^(E) named Abiathar,^(F) escaped and fled to join David.^{(G) 21} He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. ²² Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg^(H) the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family. ²³ Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you^(I) is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

²⁷ So Solomon removed Abiathar from the priesthood of the Lord, fulfilling^(A) the word the Lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli.
