Solomon’s Power, Wealth, and Wisdom
20 (A)Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is on the [a]seashore in abundance; they were eating, drinking, and rejoicing.
21 [b](B)Now Solomon was ruling over all the kingdoms (C)from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; (D)they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
22 Solomon’s [c]provision for one day was [d]thirty kors of fine flour and [e]sixty kors of meal, 23 ten fat oxen, twenty [f]pasture-fed oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened geese. 24 For he was ruling over everything [g]west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah even to (E)Gaza, (F)over all the kings [h]west of the River; and (G)he had peace on all sides surrounding him. 25 (H)So Judah and Israel lived securely, everyone under his vine and his fig tree, (I)from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. 26 (J)Solomon had [i]forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. 27 And those deputies provided food for King Solomon and all who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; they allowed nothing to be lacking. 28 They also brought barley and straw for the war horses and (K)baggage horses to the place where it was required, each deputy according to his duty.

Solomon’s Wealth and Fame
20 The people of Judah and Israel were as innumerable as the sand on the seashore; they had plenty to eat and drink and were happy. 21 (5:1)[a] Solomon ruled all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River[b] to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms paid tribute as Solomon’s subjects throughout his lifetime.[c] 22 Each day Solomon’s royal court consumed[d] thirty cors[e] of finely milled flour, sixty cors of cereal, 23 ten calves fattened in the stall,[f] 20 calves from the pasture, and 100 sheep, not to mention rams, gazelles, deer, and well-fed birds. 24 His royal court was so large because[g] he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates River from Tiphsah[h] to Gaza; he was at peace with all his neighbors.[i] 25 All the people of Judah and Israel had security; everyone from Dan to Beer Sheba enjoyed the produce of their vines and fig trees throughout Solomon’s lifetime.[j] 26 Solomon had 4,000 stalls[k] for his chariot horses and 12,000 horses. 27 The district governors acquired supplies for King Solomon and all who ate in his royal palace.[l] Each was responsible for one month in the year; they made sure nothing was lacking. 28 Each one also brought to the assigned location his quota of barley and straw for the various horses.[m]

Beginning with 6:1 the numbering of verses in the English Bible and the Hebrew text is again the same.
- 1 Kings 4:21 tn Heb “the River” (also in v. 24). This is the standard designation for the Euphrates River in biblical Hebrew.

- 1 Kings 4:22 tn As a unit of dry measure a cor was roughly equivalent to six bushels.

- 1 Kings 4:24 tn Heb “because.” The words “his royal court was so large” are added to facilitate the logical connection with the preceding verse.
- 1 Kings 4:24 sn Tiphsah. This was located on the Euphrates River.
- 1 Kings 4:24 tn Heb “for he was ruling over all [the region] beyond the River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kingdoms beyond the River, and he had peace on every side all around.”
- 1 Kings 4:25 tn Heb “Judah and Israel lived securely, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan to Beer Sheba, all the days of Solomon.”
- 1 Kings 4:26 tn The Hebrew text has “40,000,” but this is probably an inflated number (nevertheless it is followed by KJV, ASV, NASB, NRSV, TEV, CEV). Some Greek mss of the OT and the parallel in 2 Chr 9:25 read “4,000” (cf. NAB, NIV, NCV, NLT).
