12 unlike Cain who belonged to the evil one and slaughtered his brother. Why did he slaughter him? Because his own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous.(A) 13 Do not be amazed, [then,] brothers, if the world hates you.(B) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in death.(C) 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.(D)

12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one(A) and murdered his brother.(B) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.(C) 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,[a] if the world hates you.(D) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life,(E) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.(F) 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister(G) is a murderer,(H) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.(I)
