14 David reigned(B) over all Israel,(C) doing what was just and right for all his people. 15 Joab(D) son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 16 Zadok(E) son of Ahitub and Ahimelek[a](F) son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary; 17 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites;(G) and David’s sons were chief officials at the king’s side.

David’s Reign(A)

14 So David reigned over all of Israel, administering justice and equity to all of his people. 15 Zeruiah’s son Joab served in charge of the army, Ahilud’s son Jehoshaphat was his personal archivist,[a] 16 Ahitub’s son Zadok and Abiathar’s son Ahimelech were priests, Shavsha[b] was his personal secretary,[c] 17 Jehoiada’s son Benaiah supervised the special forces[d] and mercenaries,[e] while David’s sons worked as chief officials in service to the king.[f]
