¹³ When he arrived, there was Eli^(A) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

⁹ Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.^(A)

¹⁸ When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led^[a](A) Israel forty years.^(B)

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

³ They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.^(A)”

⁴ When I heard these things, I sat down and wept.^(B) For some days I mourned and fasted^(C) and prayed before the God of heaven.

⁹ The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth.^(A) What then will you do for your own great name?^(B)”
