³⁴ On your clothes is found
    the lifeblood^(A) of the innocent poor,
    though you did not catch them breaking in.^(B)
Yet in spite of all this
³⁵     you say, ‘I am innocent;^(C)
    he is not angry with me.’
But I will pass judgment^(D) on you
    because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’^(E)
36 Why do you go about so much,
    changing^(F) your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt^(G)
    as you were by Assyria.
³⁷ You will also leave that place
    with your hands on your head,^(H)
for the Lord has rejected those you trust;
    you will not be helped^(I) by them.

²² Although you wash^(A) yourself with soap^(B)
    and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
    the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.^(C)
23 “How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;^(D)
    I have not run after the Baals’?^(E)
See how you behaved in the valley;^(F)
    consider what you have done.
You are a swift she-camel
    running^(G) here and there,

¹⁸ Now why go to Egypt^(A)
    to drink water from the Nile^[a]?^(B)
And why go to Assyria^(C)
    to drink water from the Euphrates?^(D)
19 Your wickedness will punish you;
    your backsliding^(E) will rebuke^(F) you.
Consider then and realize
    how evil and bitter^(G) it is for you
when you forsake^(H) the Lord your God
    and have no awe^(I) of me,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant^(A) on your lips?^(B)
17 You hate^(C) my instruction
    and cast my words behind^(D) you.
¹⁸ When you see a thief, you join^(E) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.^(F)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.^(G)
20 You sit and testify against your brother^(H)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
²¹ When you did these things and I kept silent,^(I)
    you thought I was exactly^[a] like you.
But I now arraign^(J) you
    and set my accusations^(K) before you.
