¹⁷ Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael,^(A) and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu.^(B)

³² In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel.^(A) Hazael^(B) defeated the Israelites throughout their territory ³³ from the Jordan eastward: the whole land of Gilead—the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites—from Aroer^(C) which is by the Arnon Valley^(D) through Gilead to Bashan.^[a]

³ So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel,^(A) and he handed them over to King Hazael^(B) of Aram and to his son Ben-hadad^(C) during their reigns.
