¹⁰ So he said, ^(A)“I have been very ^(B)zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and ^(C)killed Your prophets with the sword. ^(D)I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

⁴ For so it was, while Jezebel ^[a]massacred the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water.)

²² Then Elijah said to the people, ^(A)“I alone am left a prophet of the Lord; ^(B)but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

¹⁴ (for you shall worship ^(A)no other god, for the Lord, whose ^(B)name is Jealous, is a ^(C)jealous God),

² God has not cast away His people whom ^(A)He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, ^3 (B)“Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? ⁴ But what does the divine response say to him? ^(C)“I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

³⁰ Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. ^(A)And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.

¹³ and it shall be to him and ^(A)his descendants after him a covenant of ^(B)an everlasting priesthood, because he was ^(C)zealous for his God, and ^(D)made ^[a]atonement for the children of Israel.’ ”

^11 (A)“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in ^(B)My zeal.
