⁴ When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back.

⁵ If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.^(A) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.^(B)

²⁵ The king of Israel then ordered, “Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king’s son, ²⁶ and say, ‘This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison^(A) and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.’”

²⁷ Micaiah declared, “If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Mark my words, all you people!”

⁸ But Elymas the sorcerer^(A) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul^(B) from the faith.^{(C) 9} Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,^(D) looked straight at Elymas and said, ¹⁰ “You are a child of the devil^(E) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?^{(F) 11} Now the hand of the Lord is against you.^(G) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”^(H)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

⁴ He fell to the ground and heard a voice^(A) say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.

¹² So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.^{(A) 13} They produced false witnesses,^(B) who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place^(C) and against the law. ¹⁴ For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place^(D) and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”^(E)

⁶ When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

²⁰ Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”^(A)

¹⁰ He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored.

¹⁹ But when John rebuked Herod^(A) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, ²⁰ Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.^(B)
