³⁵ but I will take the kingdom away from his son and give it to you—that is, the ten tribes.^(A)

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people because it was a turn of affairs brought about by God so that the Lord might fulfill his word that he had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.^(A)

¹⁶ When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king,

So all Israel departed to their tents.^{(B) 17} But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.

First Dynasty: Jeroboam Reigns over Israel

²⁰ When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed the house of David except the tribe of Judah alone.^(A)

¹² Yet for the sake of your father David I will not do it in your lifetime; I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

⁵ You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me^{(A) 6} but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation^[a] of those who love me and keep my commandments.^(B)
