⁹ Whoever says he is in the light and ^(A)hates his brother is still in darkness.

^20 (A)If anyone says, “I love God,” and ^(B)hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot^[a] love God ^(C)whom he has not seen.

¹¹ But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and ^(A)walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

⁹ For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he ^(A)is blind, having forgotten that he was ^(B)cleansed from his former sins.

¹³ Do not be surprised, brothers,^{[a] (A)}that the world hates you. ¹⁴ We know that ^(B)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. ^15 (C)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that ^(D)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

¹⁶ By this we know love, that ^(E)he laid down his life for us, and ^(F)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ¹⁷ But ^(G)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet ^(H)closes his heart against him, ^(I)how does God's love abide in him?

⁴ Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments ^(A)is a liar, and ^(B)the truth is not in him,

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. ² And if I have ^(A)prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, ^(B)so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ^3 (C)If I give away all I have, and ^(D)if I deliver up my body to be burned,^[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

^6 (A)If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and ^(B)do not practice the truth.
